In the hole…

We will update you in tomorrow’s game notes.

CJ can you stop hitting Home Runs please?

Washington Nationals short stop CJ Abrams has emerged as one of the top-performing shortstops in the National League and is making a strong case for his first All-Star start selection.

CJ Abrams is building a compelling All-Star case, fueled in large part by a power breakout that has reshaped his offensive profile.

Abrams leads all National League shortstops with 16 home runs and 32 extra-base hits, a significant jump that has elevated him from a speed-first threat into one of the most complete offensive players at the position. That added power is driving run production as well—his 56 RBI rank first among NL shortstops and third in the league overall, showing his growing impact in the middle of the lineup.

The underlying metrics reinforce just how valuable he has been. Abrams leads NL shortstops in OPS (.886), wRC+ (143), wOBA (.381), slugging percentage (.520), on-base percentage (.366), and runs scored (49), while placing among the top 10 hitters across the entire National League in several of those categories.

Why it matters:

That combination of power, efficiency, and consistency matters because it positions Abrams not just as one of the best shortstops in the league, but as one of its most productive hitters overall.

For a Washington Nationals team continuing to develop its young core, Abrams’ emergence as a legitimate middle-of-the-order force is a key driver of both present competitiveness and long-term upside and exactly the kind of impact that merits All-Star recognition.

Truckin', got my chips cashed in. Keep truckin', like the do-dah man

Washington has now won five straight road series, marking the club’s longest such streak since April 27–May 27, 2015.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, the last MLB team to win at least five consecutive road series was the New York Yankees, who closed out the 2025 season by winning their final seven road series.

Elias also notes the franchise record (Montreal/Washington) is six consecutive road series wins, achieved three times, most recently in July–August 1994 when the Expos swept their final six road series before the strike ended the season.

The Nationals are 24–15 (.615) on the road this season. Their 24 road wins are tied for the most in MLB with Atlanta and New York (AL), while their .615 road winning percentage ranks tied for second behind the Braves (.632).

Washington enters today having won five of its last seven games, nine of its last 14, and four straight series. Since May 12, the Nationals are 9-1-1 in their last 11 series.

They have also won six of their last seven rubber games.

Since April 25, Washington is 29–21 (.580) and has claimed 12 of its last 16 series.

Why it matters:

The Nationals’ recent surge especially their dominance on the road signals a team that is not just playing well, but doing so consistently against varying opponents and environments.

Winning series away from home is one of the clearest indicators of a legitimate contender, and Washington’s 9-1-1 run in its last 11 series underscores that this is more than a short-term hot streak. With one of the best road records in baseball and sustained success dating back to late April, the Nationals are building a foundation of consistency that keeps them firmly in the postseason conversation while showing measurable growth from earlier in the season.

Washington Nationals Player Notes:

  • My Sweet Lord: Since April 25, Brad Lord has gone 4–0 with one save and three holds while posting a 1.10 ERA (4 ER/32.2 IP). Opponents are hitting just .175 against him (two doubles, one home run), and he has recorded 31 strikeouts to 10 walks. Over his last eight appearances, Lord has been even more dominant, allowing just two earned runs across 19.0 innings (0.95 ERA) while holding opponents to a .127 average (8-for-63). Lord also leads all Major League relievers with 51.0 innings pitched this season.

  • Mashing Nasim: Nasim Nuñez is red hot, going 10-for-18 (.556) with a double, two triples, four RBI, three walks, two stolen bases, and six runs scored over his last six games. He has posted a .619 on-base percentage and an .833 slugging percentage during that stretch. He has also reached base safely in a career-high 12 consecutive games, batting .400 (16-for-40) with a .455 on-base percentage (four walks) and a .550 slugging percentage (two doubles, two triples). So far this season, Nuñez ranks second in Major League Baseball with 27 stolen bases, trailing only Bobby Witt Jr. (28).

  • James Wood vs. The All-Star Game: James Wood has built a strong case for an All-Star selection, ranking among the National League’s best across multiple offensive categories. He leads all NL outfielders and all of Major League Baseball—in runs scored (68), while also pacing NL outfielders in walks (59) and on-base percentage (.399), the latter ranking fourth overall in the league. Wood’s power production has been just as impressive. His 20 home runs are tied for third in the NL and lead all NL outfielders, while his 37 extra-base hits rank tied for second in the league and second among NL outfielders. Overall, he ranks near the top of the league in advanced metrics, including OPS (.936, fourth in NL), wRC+ (157, fourth), and wOBA (.401, fourth), while his .540 slugging percentage ranks seventh in the NL.

  • Start Spreading the Saves, I'm leavin' today. I want to be a part of it: Washington has relied on a wide mix of arms to close out games this season, with nine different pitchers recording at least one save. That total is tied for the second-most in Major League Baseball (with Cincinnati), trailing only Minnesota (11), and marks the second-highest total in Nationals history (2005–present), behind the 2017 club (11). Gus Varland leads the group with six saves, followed by Clayton Beeter (five) and Richard Lovelady (four). PJ Poulin and Orlando Ribalta each have two, while Andrew Alvarez, Brad Lord, Mitchell Parker, and Paxton Schultz have all added one apiece.

On the mound for the Washington Nationals
Andrew Alvarez

Andrew Alvarez turned in a solid outing on June 15 vs. Kansas City, allowing one earned run on five hits over 4.0 innings while striking out five and walking one.

15-7

Alvarez’s curveball has been a major weapon this season, holding opponents to a .162 average (6-for-37) with just one extra-base hit (a double). He has recorded 20 strikeouts with the pitch, the most of any offering in his arsenal.

When Alvarez takes the mound, Washington has found success. The Nationals are 9-4 (.692) in his 13 career Major League appearances dating back to his debut on Sept. 1, 2025 at Miami.
