Washington D.C. - The Washington Nationals could not avoid a sweep at the hands of the Marlins by dropping Monday morning's July 4th game, 3-2. In club history, the Marlins recorded their first four-game sweep against the Nationals.

The Nationals left a significant amount of runners on base, especially when the Nationals loaded the bases and only had one out at the bottom of the eighth. The Lane Thomas pop-up to the catcher Nick Fortes in foul territory followed by a fly out by Josh Bell ended the Nationals' threat quickly.

On the other hand, LHP Patrick Corbin put in another impressive outing. Over Patrick Corbin’s last three starts, he has gone 19 innings, struck out 22, and has a 2.37 ERA. Today, Corbin went seven innings, giving up eight hits and only allowing one run. His ERA improved from 6.06 to 5.68 ERA for the season.

LHP Patrick Corbin's final line: 7.0 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K

The Nationals now have a record of 29-53. Their next game will be tomorrow night against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Nationals will send RHP Paolo Espino to face the Phillies. Since joining the rotation, Espino is 0-1 with a 3.93 ERA in six starts. Before that, he posted a 2.03 ERA in 20 games out of Washington's bullpen.
