Washington Nationals Game Story Line

The Washington Nationals look to avoid their first sweep of the 2021 season this afternoon. Today's game will feature a matchup of two three-time Cy Young Award winners, Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw. There are only ten pitchers in Major League history to win the Cy Young Award three times, and two of them will face off on Sunday.

Today’s GameNotes

Pitching Matchup

The Washington Nationals will look to Max Scherzer to avoid a series sweep this afternoon. With 2,793 in hand, Max Scherzer is five strikeouts away from tying (six from passing) Hall of Fame Pitcher Cy Young (2,798) for 22nd place on Major League Baseball's all-time strikeout list.

Since joining the Nationals in 2015, Scherzer is 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA (6 ER/33.0 IP) in five regular-season starts against the Dodgers. Scherzer won his last three regular-season starts at Dodger Stadium (3-0, 1.67 ERA)

In 2019, he faced the Dodgers twice in the 2019 NLDS. He tossed a perfect 8th inning (3 SO) in Game 2 and helped the Nationals avoid elimination in Game 4 (7.0 IP, 4 H, ER, 3 BB, 7 SO)

Clayton Kershaw will take the mound for the Los Angels Dodgers as they sweep the 2019 World Series Champions, the Washington Nationals. In Kershaw's last outing against the Oakland Athletics, Kershaw allowed just one run and struck out eight in seven innings of work. So far, Kershaw is 1-1 with an ERA of 4.26.

Today's appearance will be the first time Kershaw has faced the Washington Nationals since the NLDS in 2019.

Do you want a CY Young? I'll raise you mine.

There are only ten pitchers in Major League history to win the Cy Young Award three times, and two of them will face off this afternoon. Scherzer and Kershaw last squared off on April 20, 2018, in Washington's 5-2 victory at Dodger Stadium.

O, Captain! My Captain

Ryan Zimmerman leads the National League and is second in Major League Baseball with a .471 batting average. Zimmerman is 8-for-17 (.471) with a double and two runs scored, and he has recorded three multi-hit games in his four starts.

Oh Juan

Juan Soto hit his first two home runs of the 2021 season on Saturday night, making his eighth career multi-home run game. Soto hit a sixth-inning solo shot off Julio Urías and a ninth-inning two-run homer off Scott Alexander.

Soto has reached base safely in all five games this season, going 6-for-16 (.375) with two homers, four RBI, five walks, one stolen base, and six runs scored. Soto's .524 on-base percentage ranks third in the National League and seventh in Major League baseball.
