Game 3 Storylines and Notes

The Sens and SeaWolves play Game three of six tonight, Thursday, July 10th at UPMC Park in Erie, PA. The Senators have won the first two games of the series and are the Southwest Divsion mates are now tied at 10 games a piece through the first 20 games of the season. The Sens look to take tonight’s game and guarantee themselves at least a split of the six game series. The Senators will need to take two of the next four games to win their third straight series to open the second half. The Senators open tonight’s game is sole possession of 2nd place in the Southwest Divison, trailing Erie by 2 games. They lead both first half winner Richmond and Bowie by a ½ game, thanks to losses by both teams last night.

The Sens hand the ball to Riley Maddox for his first AA start and his second appearance of the season. Riley pitched in his first game with the Sens last Friday night against Richmond in a relief appearance after Trevor Williams made a rehab start. Maddox battled through 5 innings but was hit pretty good by the Richmond lineup. He also gave up two long balls in the outing. He gave up 5 runs on 8 hits, walking 1 and striking out 4. The Senators are looking for Maddox to get back to his June form. In June he threw 27 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs on 21 hits, walking 10 and striking out 24. Tonight will be Maddox’s first time facing any of the players in the Erie lineup.

The SeaWolves will counter with Andrew Sears. Sears will make his fifth appearance for the SeaWolves since his promotion from A+ West Michigan in Mid June. Two of Sears four starts with the SeaWolves have come against the Senators in the series last month in Harrisburg. Sears pitched well in each of those games going a combined 7 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 11. His most recent start game six days ago when he earned the win against Akron after a 4 1/3 innings, 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeout appearance. Senators hope the third times the charm facing Sears.

Harrisburg Senators - Erie SeaWolves Game Two Recap
LAST GAME RECAP

The Senators did something yesterday afternoon that they’ve struggled to do at times this year. They won a third game in a row. The Sens would often get to the that two game winning streak and you think this group is going to get going. In that third game they’d come out flat. Not yesterday. Yesterday, the Sens kept swinging even when they only had one hit through the first two frames.

Erie got the party started in the home half of the second with a Patrick Lee single and a Joe Campagna double each driving in a pair for the home team. Devin Fitz-Gerald would counter with an RBI double that he smoked off of the left center field wall scoring Kervin Pichardo. TJ White, Tuesday night's hero, would pull the Sens even with an RBI single in the 4th. He did strand the go ahead run at third base on a base running blunder trying to extend his hit to a double. Never came back to bite the Sens. Sam Petersen would pick up his outfield counterpart in the next inning when he absolutely crushed an RBI double off of the high left field wall, that would’ve been a home run in most ball parks, scoring Kervin Pichardo. The big blast would come two innings later. Senators 3B Kervin Pichardo would put an exclamation point on his tremendous 4-4 evening with a high fly ball that was carried right over the right field wall. The 4-2 lead would be ample on the afternoon, even against a great offensive Erie team but the Senators tacked on a run in the 9th for good measure. Branden Boissiere would single directly off of Erie pitcher Tyler Owens scoring Pichardo.

Isaac Lyon threw another stellar outing in his young AA stint. He earned the win after going 6 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, walking 1 and striking out 4. His ERA is now 4.54 in AA. Jhancarlos Lara and Seth Shuman combined on 3 innings out hitless ball to preseve the 5-2 win for Lyon and the Senators. Lyon is now 3-3 on the year.
