Washington Nationals 2025 Season
THE LEAD

A former National made history last night against another former National in the Phillies’ 19-4 drubbing of Atlanta. Although he entered the game on a 0-20 mini-skid, Kyle Schwarber became the 21st player in major league history* to hit four home runs in a game, with the final one coming off of Wander Suero in the seventh inning. Schwarber, who had a three-homer day during his brief time as a National, now has a career-high 49 bombs on the year and 333 in his eleven-year career. Although his top Baseball-Reference comp through age 31 (he is currently in his age-32 season) is Dave Kingman, Schwarber seems to be aging more like Nelson Cruz (who hit 307 home runs from his age-33 season on) than Kingman (who hit 150 bombs between 33 and 37 but never walked as much as Schwarber does). I know that the Nationals need right-handed power more than anything in their lineup. Still, I would not be opposed to bringing back Schwarber this winter as the full-time DH - in some crazy parallel universe where the Lerners decide to invest money in their baseball team.
*The list of four-homer games is a fun one. Baseball nerds will see a lot of obvious power hitters on there…and there’s also Scooter Gennett (lol), Pat Seerey (86 career homers, washed out of the majors at 26), and Bobby Lowe (19th-century guy with 71 home runs). Six Hall of Famers - Delahanty, Gehrig, Klein, Hodges, Mays, and Schmidt - have achieved the feat. Might Schwarber become the seventh?

Game Recap

Mercifully, there was no game yesterday after the ugliness in the Bronx, but the Nats will open a three-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays at home beginning tonight. It is looking like LHP Mitchell Parker (7-14, 6.01 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Nationals tonight, while RHP Adrian Houser (7-4, 2.88 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Rays tonight.
STORY TYPE
Off-season Moves?

As long as we are touching on the subject of free agency, why don’t you tell us who you would like the Nationals to go after in free agency? Please let us know in the comments who from this rather comprehensive list you would be interested in trying to sign. I could go in many directions, but I think my ideal winter would be a combination of Schwarber, one of Framber Valdez or Shane Bieber, a roll of the dice like Michael Soroka (again) or Dustin May, and Rhys Hoskins or something similar. Add 70 home runs, one very good starting pitcher, and one who could be. Tell us what you think!
