Washington Nationals 2025 Season

Howard Bound

June was a challenging month for the Washington Nationals, who closed out with a tough 10-19 record amid a series of off-the-field distractions, including controversial comments, an 11-game losing streak, and a notable timed call-up.

The team arrived in Southern California on June 19, riding the momentum of a walk-off win against the Rockies that finally ended their losing streak. They wrapped up their West Coast trip with a 4-5 record, with three of those losses coming by just one run.

Looking ahead, July holds promise and potential turning points for the Nationals. With the MLB Amateur Draft set for July 13 in Atlanta, where they’ll likely select a franchise-changing prospect, and the trade deadline approaching, the team’s future could shift dramatically. One thing is clear: the Nationals are eager to turn the page and start winning ballgames in July.

As the calendar flips, the Nationals’ clubhouse is focused on fresh opportunities. Key players are returning from injury, and young prospects are hungry to prove themselves on the big stage. With a pivotal draft pick and the trade deadline looming, the front office has a chance to reshape the roster and set a new course for the rest of the season. Nationals fans have every reason to stay tuned—July could be the month that sparks a turnaround and brings renewed excitement to the team.

Game Recap

Nationals End Road Trip on a High Note with Dramatic Extra-Innings Win Over Angels

After a tough month and a grueling Southern California road trip, the Washington Nationals finally found a way to win when it mattered most, defeating the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 in 11 innings and snapping a streak of seven consecutive series losses.

For much of the game, the Nationals did just enough to keep things close, overcoming missed opportunities and controversial calls. “We haven't done as well as we'd like in the wins department this road trip,” said reliever Kyle Finnegan, who pitched a career-best three scoreless innings to earn the victory. “But I feel like we've played pretty good baseball. So to win a game like this—last game of a long road trip away from home, guys away from their families, grind one out in extra innings—I feel like it's good for our morale.”

We felt like we'd been in all three series this trip. This is the first one we were actually able to pull out. So to be able to go home now and maybe carry some momentum into the homestand and get rolling, would be great.

Jacob Young

The Nationals tied the game in the ninth with Jacob Young’s clutch RBI single off Angels closer Kenley Jansen, then broke it open in the 11th with a rally led by young players Daylen Lile, Drew Millas, and CJ Abrams. Millas, making his first big league start of the season, delivered a key RBI double, while Abrams followed with a two-run triple to seal the win.

“I was pretty comfortable going into (my at-bat),” Millas explained. “I knew he was going to try to use his changeup and the heater up. I kind of got a heater that I like to hit with two strikes, when I back it up, and did something with it.”

The game also featured a historic moment for James Wood, who was intentionally walked four times, a feat not seen since Barry Bonds in 2004. “That's pretty cool,” Wood said. “If you're getting put in the same sentence as him, that's pretty cool.”

Manager Davey Martinez was ejected in the fifth inning after a controversial call at the plate wasn’t overturned by replay, but he watched the team’s comeback from the clubhouse. “It sucked that I watched it on television,” Martinez admitted. “But I'm glad we got the job done.” He later praised his players’ resilience: “I give credit to our boys. They played hard the whole game. Finnegan, he looked like a starter out there today. The boys battled, and they played really hard. I loved the energy, especially late in the game.”

Jacob Young, who was at the center of several key plays, summed up the team’s mindset heading home: “We felt like we'd been in all three series this trip. This is the first one we were actually able to pull out. So to be able to go home now and maybe carry some momentum into the homestand and get rolling, would be great.”

With the win, the Nationals finished their trip 4-5, with three of those losses coming by a single run. The victory not only snapped a frustrating stretch but also gave the team hope for a turnaround as they head into July.
