Washington Nationals rookie outfielder Jacob Young has been recognized for his outstanding defensive performance this season. He was named one of three finalists for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award in center field.
Young, 25, showcased exceptional defensive skills, leading all of Major League Baseball across all positions with 18 runs prevented and tying for the Major League lead with 20 outs above average. His defensive metrics were among the best in the league, surpassing even established outfielders.
Young's athleticism and speed were on full display, as he led all MLB outfielders with 15 outs on balls with a 25-50 percent catch probability and tied for the Major League lead with seven catches made with a 0-25 percent catch probability.
His quickness was further highlighted by his record-breaking reaction time, matching Enrique Hernández's mark of 4.7 feet in the first 1.5 seconds of opportunity.
Young's defensive prowess extended beyond his physical attributes. According to FanGraphs, he led all National League center fielders in defensive rating and was tied for the lead in defensive runs saved.
If Young wins the Gold Glove, he will become just the 18th rookie in the 67-year award history to be named a recipient and only the seventh outfielder to win the honor. He would also be the first Nationals outfielder and third National player to win a Gold Glove.
The Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners will be announced on Sunday, November 3, at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.
