Per a report by the Althetic Ken Rosenthal and Andy McCollough the New York Mets are in agreement with former Chicago Cubs Centerfielder and free agent Albert Almora Jr., pending a physical.
The deal is expected to be a major league, incentive-laden deal for the Magnus Sports client, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network
Almora, 26, was selected sixth overall by the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the 2012 Amateur draft right out of Mater Academy Charter Highschool in Hialeah, Florida.
During the shortened 2020 season, Almora had only 30 at-bats, with five hits and a batting average of .167. Almora only played in 26 games during the 2020 season. However, in 2019, Almora played in 130 games and had 363 plate appearances, which he hit 12 home runs, 80 hits, had a batting average of .236, and a slugging percentage of .381.
Almora broke into the majors midway through the Cubs' World Series-winning 2016 season. Over his first year-plus as a big leaguer, he looked to be establishing himself as another long-term core piece for Chicago. Between 2016-17, Almora was roughly a league-average hitter. Combined with his glove in center, he at least seemed to be establishing himself as a solid regular.
Over the past five seasons, Almora has played in 489 games, has a fielding percentage of .991, has only committed seven errors, and has had 732 putouts from the outfield.
The New York Mets have been extremely busy this offseason by signing Catcher James McCain and trading for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco from the Indians. The Mets were also considered finalists for Trevour Bauer, who ultimately signed with the Los Angels Dodgers.
