Major League Baseball Requests a Federal Mediator to Help Resolve Lockout

Breaking news in the negotiations between Major League Baseball and the Players Union to come up with a new CBA so that the 2022 season can start. According to ESPN.com's Jeff Passan reports [Twitter link], Major League Baseball has asked the c for assistance in ending the lockout.

As per MLB's request, a federal meditator would step in to help resolve the many outstanding issues between the owners and the players and help resolve the next collective bargaining agreement.

Upon request, FMCS provides panels of arbitrators experienced in labor relations issues, from which the parties can select as provided in their collective bargaining agreement or other mutual agreement. Requests can be tailored to accommodate a variety of requirements, including for expertise, fees, and geography, provided both parties agree. Other kinds of customization are available.

The MLBPA would also have to sign off on a mediator’s involvement, and it isn’t yet clear whether the union has consented to this third-party consultation. Additionally, Evan Drellich Senior Writer of the Athletic, reported that sources have told him that MLB has told the players association it will not make a counteroffer, which is reversing course on what was said two days ago.
