WASHINGTON D.C. - The Washington Nationals have appointed Miguel Cairo as the team’s Interim Manager for the remainder of the 2025 season, the club announced on Monday. The announcement was made by Mike DeBartolo, the Nationals’ Interim General Manager, after both Mike Rizzo and Davey Martinez were fired yesterday evening.
Cairo joined the Nationals in 2024 as the team’s bench coach, bringing with him a wealth of experience. Prior to joining Washington, he served as the Minor League infield coordinator for the New York Mets during the 2023 season. He also spent two seasons (2021–22) as the bench coach for the Chicago White Sox, where he stepped in as acting manager for the final 34 games of the 2022 season, leading the team to an 18–16 record. Additionally, Cairo served as acting manager on two notable occasions in 2021: at the Field of Dreams Game against the New York Yankees (AL) on August 12 (a 9–8 victory) and on September 7 at Texas (a 7–2 win).
“Miguel is highly respected throughout our organization and across Major League Baseball,” said Mike DeBartolo. “He is a dedicated worker and a keen student of the game, with a proven ability to lead effectively in diverse situations. I am confident that his leadership and enthusiasm will energize both our team and our fans as we head into the second half of the season.”
Before his time with the Mets, Cairo worked as the Minor League infield coordinator for the New York Yankees from 2018 to 2020. After retiring as a player in 2013, he served as a special assistant to the general manager for the Cincinnati Reds until 2017.
A native of Anaco, Venezuela, Cairo boasts a 17-season Major League playing career. He showcased his versatility by playing every infield position as well as left and right field. Cairo made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1996 and went on to play for several teams, including the Chicago Cubs, Tampa Bay Rays, St. Louis Cardinals, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Philadelphia Phillies, and Cincinnati Reds.
