Today the San Diego Padres announced that they have agreed to terms with Bob Melvin to be their next manager on a three-year contract to become the 22nd manager in franchise history, President of Baseball Operations & General Manager A.J. Preller announced today.

“Bob is one of the top managers in the game and brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge and a proven track record to win at the Major League level,” Preller said. “Throughout the process, Bob showed our group a true love of baseball and a natural presence to lead. It was immediately evident how he’s been able to bring out the best in his players throughout his managerial career. We believe that Bob is the right man to take our talented group and help them deliver a championship to the city of San Diego.”

Over 18 seasons managing in Major League Baseball, Melvin has compiled a .514 (1,346-1,272) winning percentage in 2,618 games between the Seattle Mariners (2003-04), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-09) and Oakland Athletics (2011-21), including a .528 (853-764) mark over his 11 seasons with the A’s. The three-time Manager of the Year (2007 NL Manager of the Year with ARI, 2012 & 2018 AL Manager of the Year w/OAK) has led his clubs to seven postseason appearances and four division titles. Among active Major League managers, only Tony La Russa (2,821), Dusty Baker (1,987), Terry Francona (1,782) and Joe Maddon (1,355) have more wins. Melvin’s six postseason appearances with the A’s (2012-14, 18-20) were the most by a manager in Oakland history and trail only Connie Mack, who had eight World Series appearances, in Athletics history.

Prior to being named Oakland’s manager, Melvin served as a special baseball advisor to D’backs President & CEO Derrick Hall in 2011, as well as a professional scout for the New York Mets in 2010.

A 10-year Major League veteran, Melvin posted a .233 batting average with 35 home runs and 212 RBI in 692 career games between the Detroit Tigers (1985), San Francisco Giants (1986-88), Baltimore Orioles (1989-91), Kansas City Royals (1992), Boston Red Sox (1993), New York Yankees (1994) and Chicago White Sox (1994).

The former catcher was originally selected by Detroit in the 1st round of the 1981 MLB January secondary phase draft. He graduated from Menlo-Atherton High School (Ca.) in 1979 and later attended and played baseball at the University of California, Berkeley and Cañada College (Ca.).
