Major League Baseball is set to build on the momentum of its popular Spring Breakout event by introducing a new Spring Breakout Tournament beginning with the 2027 and 2028 Spring Training schedules, the league announced today.
The new format will transform Spring Breakout into a single-elimination tournament held in late March, giving fans a more competitive look at the game’s elite young talent as top prospects compete for a Spring Breakout championship title.
New Tournament Format Coming in 2027
For the first time, Spring Breakout games will feature tournament-style matchups with teams composed of each club’s top prospects from both the Cactus League and Grapefruit League. Each league will crown its own Spring Breakout champion, adding stakes and structure to an event already celebrated for highlighting baseball’s future stars.
MLB confirmed the tournament’s debut was scheduled for 2027 in order to avoid conflicts with the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
Commissioner of Baseball Robert D. Manfred, Jr. emphasized the importance of the expanded format.
“Spring Breakout has provided invaluable exposure to the future stars of our game and given our fans a preview of all the exciting talent that is flowing into our sport,” Manfred said. “With more meaningful games, the Spring Breakout Tournament will take this event to the next level and create a unique experience for our fans ahead of Opening Day.”
All 16 Spring Breakout games will be televised live across MLB Network, local regional sports networks, or streamed on MLB’s digital platforms. Eleven games will be played as standalone events at Major League Spring Training venues, while five contests will be held as single-admission doubleheaders alongside MLB Spring Training games.
