MACKENZIE GORE'S 13 STRIKEOUTS ON OPENING DAY

Phillies 7 vs. Nationals 3
March 27, 2025 | Nationals Park, Washington D.C.
In a season opener that arrived earlier than any in Washington Nationals history, left-hander MacKenzie Gore delivered a performance for the record books. The 25-year-old struck out 13 Phillies over six scoreless innings, setting a new franchise Opening Day record (spanning both the Montreal and Washington eras) and establishing a personal career high.
Gore’s command was masterful—no walks, no runs, and near-complete control from his first pitch to his last. His outing not only set the tone for Washington Nationals 2025 season but also placed him in exclusive company. According to MLB research, Gore joined Hall of Famer Bob Gibson as the only pitchers since 1900 to record at least 13 strikeouts with no runs and no walks on Opening Day.
Despite Gore’s brilliance, the bullpen faltered late as the Phillies rallied for a 7–3 win. Still, Opening Day 2025 may be remembered less for the final score and more for Gore’s dominant statement—a potential glimpse of the ace Nationals fans have been waiting for.
