Nationals Continue Front Office Overhaul, Set to Hire Justin Horowitz as Assistant GM

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH
The Nationals are set to hire Justin Horowitz as assistant GM, marking another major front office change under new president of baseball operations Paul Toboni. Horowitz, a respected talent evaluator from the Pirates and formerly part of Toboni’s Red Sox scouting crew, is expected to play a key role in revamping Washington’s draft strategy.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
Justin Horowitz tapped as Nationals’ assistant GM after successful run as Pirates’ director of amateur scouting.
Paul Toboni continues to shape his front office, bringing trusted colleagues from his Red Sox scouting days.
Devin Pearson joined earlier this offseason; both he and Horowitz previously worked under Toboni.
Ex-assistant GMs Eddie Longosz and Mark Scialabba exit; Mike DeBartolo’s future role remains unclear.
Nationals still searching for a new director of amateur scouting following Brad Ciolek’s departure to Detroit.
🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE
“There’s no mystery here—Toboni wants people he trusts to reboot the draft process,” an industry source told The Nats Report. “Horowitz’s track record in Pittsburgh and history with Toboni in Boston make this a logical, if unsurprising, move.”

Nationals Zero In on Manager Search as Paul Toboni Builds His Vision for 2026

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH
The Nationals’ managerial search is accelerating as president of baseball operations Paul Toboni narrows in on candidates who fit his scouting-driven and development-first philosophy. With front office restructuring largely complete, Toboni’s focus has shifted to finding a long-term clubhouse leader capable of connecting with Washington’s young core and guiding the next stage of the rebuild.
Recent interviews include interim manager Miguel Cairo and Guardians associate manager Craig Albernaz, according to The Washington Post’s Andrew Golden. Albernaz, who served as Cleveland’s bench coach in 2024, has also drawn interest from the Giants, Guardians, White Sox, and Marlins in past managerial cycles. Before joining the Guardians, he spent four years with the Giants as bullpen and catching coach, and four more seasons in the Rays’ system, where he managed two affiliates.
Meanwhile, The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that Brandon Hyde has also interviewed for the Nationals’ opening. Hyde, who managed the Orioles for parts of seven seasons, brings extensive Beltway familiarity. Though his early years in Baltimore were mired in a rebuild, Hyde led the O’s to three straight winning seasons and postseason berths in 2023 and 2024 before being dismissed in May following a rough start. He’s expressed interest in returning to a managerial role, having reportedly been linked to multiple openings this fall.
Toboni, now a month into his tenure, continues to reshape the Nationals’ baseball operations group—most recently naming Justin Horowitz as assistant general manager. Club officials have not ruled out retaining Cairo, but indications suggest Toboni prefers to hire his own skipper ahead of the 2025 Winter Meetings to allow time for the new manager to shape the spring roster.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
Paul Toboni leading a comprehensive managerial search following an offseason of major front office turnover.
Interviews have included Miguel Cairo, Craig Albernaz, and Brandon Hyde.
Albernaz’s résumé spans stops with Cleveland, San Francisco, and Tampa Bay; Hyde brings postseason experience and divisional familiarity.
The Nationals are emphasizing communication, adaptability, and player development expertise.
Decision expected before the Winter Meetings as Washington seeks alignment between leadership, philosophy, and its evolving young roster.
🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE
“There’s a lot of focus right now on culture and communication — Toboni isn’t just looking for a tactician,” one league source told MLB.com. “He’s searching for a manager who can grow with this roster and align with the developmental structure he’s putting in place”.
Another National League executive added that the Nationals are casting a wide net, mixing interviews with experienced bench coaches and player development minds.
“Toboni’s background in scouting and analytics means he wants a collaborator, not a figurehead,” the executive said, hinting that managerial experience won’t outweigh fit and philosophy in Washington’s final decision
