Heads were turned when it was quietly revealed that the Washington Nationals would hold a press conference on Monday morning at the stadium, as the team is not playing today. People started to speculate that this was for a business deal, and they were correct. The team announced that they signed a multi-year deal with AARP (formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons) to have the team’s jerseys feature a sleeve patch with the non-profit’s logo.

No details of the deal have been made public, such as length or financials. However, this is significant, as the Nationals were previously the only team in baseball without either a stadium naming rights deal or a sleeve patch. This left tons of potential revenue on the table, hindering opportunities to go spend money on players. While the team supposedly would still like to ink a stadium naming rights contract, this should serve as a great starting point. The Nationals fired their chief revenue officer and marketing director earlier in the season, so there were fears that these two deals would be delayed or even fall through. Alas, it seems that fans can relax, as the team is now starting to take advantage of opportunities that can help them bring in players this offseason, and for years to come.
More details coming soon…
