On Wednesday afternoon, news broke via ESPN’s Jeff Passan that the Nationals plan to hire 35-year-old Red Sox Assistant GM Paul Toboni as the team’s new head of Baseball Operations. This is the title that was formerly held by Mike Rizzo, who was fired in July along with Dave Martinez.
Toboni is considered as an elite young executive, having picked young stars like Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell, and more. Some of his picks also helped the Red Sox acquire lefty ace Garrett Crochet.
While an official announcement has not yet been made, this move will allow the Nationals to proceed with trying to find a new manager, and plan for the offseason with about five weeks before free agency begins.
