⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

Despite the Nationals’ record so far, the team has managed to get hits, get on base, and score runs. This is key not only because it gives the team a chance to win games, but because it also gives the hitting lineup an identity.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • By the end of the 2025 season, the Nationals’ strikeout rate was 22.6%, and their walk rate was at 7.4%, thus making their BB/K ratio the third-worst out of all teams in the MLB

  • Just ten games into the season, the team is showing just how much of an improvement they’ve made, with the strikeout rate decreasing nearly a full two percent to 20.9% and the walk rate increasing over two percent to 9.7%, making the team’s BB/K ratio 11th best in the league so far

  • This development is also coming on a wider scale, as six Nats hitters have a BB/K ratio over 0.50 so far this season, while in 2025, only two players on the team had that statistic

  • Despite having a slightly higher whiff and chase rate compared to last season, CJ Abrams’ strikeout rate has decreased by approximately 3% while his walk rate has increased by around 6%, making him one of the players to see the most improvement in comparison to last season

  • Brady House has also seen major improvement since last season, over tripling his walk rate from last season, it going from 2.9% to 10%, and improving both his whiff and chase rates, though his strikeout rate has increased from 28.5% last season to 30% this season

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

The effect of this improvement isn’t shown just in the team and players’ statistics, but also in the fact that the team has a more solid identity now. They can now be seen as a team that will slowly eat away at your defense and your pitcher, working hard through base hits and walks to accumulate both momentum and a lead. This then increases team chemistry and clubhouse cohesion, something that is always needed in a team battling for every win they can get.

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

There is no questioning that the Nats have had major bullpen issues as of late, with the number of blown leads in as many games. So, the question on everyone’s minds is: what can be done to help improve the situation?

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Nationals’ bullpen issues have caused the team to blow three leads across their first four series of the season, which, if not blown, would have led to the team currently having both a winning record as well as third place in their division

  • The most immediately helpful solution to the Nats’ current weaker bullpen would be to get more aggressive on the trade front in the coming months to stem the issues and losses that could come from more potential mistakes that would only compound with time

  • Another potential solution for the front office is to keep focusing on waiver claims and really focus energy into finding a diamond in the rough whose potential was not seen from their previous team

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

While many may push to find the one responsible and hold their feet to the fire, and they should, there are more productive avenues available. The most ideal fix is a major trade or a couple of smaller trades to bring in some new talent that has been Major League tested and is ready to help carry the bullpen. These idea trades would be made sooner rather than later so that the hotter streak that the Nats’ bats have been on as of late doesn’t have an extended period of time to quiet down before some defensive support is brought in.

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

While the pendulum of victory swings one way for two of the Nats’ minor league teams, it swings the other way for the other two. Some tough losses and overwhelming victories see each team reach the halfway point of each of their extended, nearly week-long series.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • Rochester lost a rough one, 8-2, to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs last night, bringing the Red Wings’ lead in their extended road series against the IronPigs to just one game, with the second half of the series still left to play

  • The Harrisburg Senators blew out the Akron RubberDucks in a 12-1 win yesterday, powered by the bats of Kervin Pichardo and Maxwell Romero Jr., who both went 3-4 with a combined four RBIs and four runs between them

  • The Wilmington Blue Rocks got shut out by the Hudson Valley Renegades 2-0 after starting their road series strong, offensively speaking, scoring a total of 16 runs in their first two games against the Renegades

  • Fredericksburg beat the Hill City Howlers 8-3 behind both strong pitching and hitting performances, with the pitching rotation racking up a collective total of 11 strikeouts, and Luke Dickerson and Coy James combining for three runs and four RBIs

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

Not only did the Harrisburg Senators blow out the RubberDucks yesterday afternoon, but they also came back to win the first game of the series in extra innings. This came after blowing their original lead of right runs in the top of the sixth inning when Akron scored seven runs, adding three more in the top of the seventh. While the offense did save the day, the bullpen blowing such a sizable lead, particularly when starter Shinnosuke Ogasawara had such a good game, is something that warrants some worry and an eye being kept on the bullpen.
