What is the latest around the sale of the Washington Nationals?

It was reported yesterday that local sports owner Ted Leonsis the owner of Washington’s NBA, NHL, and WNBA franchises, has emerged as a suitor for the Washington Nationals. It looks like he isn't alone. According to a report by the Washington Business Journal, "Private equity billionaire David Rubenstein is part of a bid from Monumental Sports & Entertainment Managing Partner Ted Leonsis to potentially buy the Washington Nationals from the Lerner family, according to a person with knowledge of the proceedings."

In the case, David Rubenstein, a native of Baltimore, has been mentioned as a potential new owner for the Orioles in the case infighting within the Angelos family ultimately led to a sale.

Yesterday's report of Ted Leonsis emerging as a possible suitor for the Washington Nationals came as it was announced that Monumental Sports Network would purchase NBC Sports Washington. NBC Sports Washington regional sports network broadcasts Wizards and Capitals games. Monumental acquired a one-third stake in NBC Sports Washington from Comcast in 2016. It is an interesting development as the Nationals are currently in a decades-long legal dispute with MASN about rights fees for the Nationals.

The Orioles control MASN as part of an accord reached between Major League Baseball and the Angelos family, which owns the Orioles when the Nationals relocated to the District.

Asked in a Tuesday interview by the Washington Post about his family’s interest in the Nationals, Zach Leonsis — Monumental’s president of media and new enterprises and Ted’s son — said it was “inappropriate to comment."

It was reported in April that The Lerners were looking into potential changes to ownership, and brought on New York investment bank Allen & Co. to search for new investors in the franchise or perhaps an outright buyer.
