Quick Notes: Ildemaro Vargas gets another guaranteed year with the Nationals

The Washington Nationals have come to terms with veteran utility man Ildemaro Vargas this afternoon, according to the team. While no figures have been reported, it will be a one-year deal. Because Vargas is still arbitration eligible, Vargas can potentially be with the Nationals organization until the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Vargas has taken a career-high 277 plate appearances this season. He hit .248/.302/.358 for a .660 OPS. Vargas has appeared at five positions for the Nationals this season, but a vast majority of that time has come in the infield. On the dirt, he has drawn positive grades for his defensive work, putting up above-average DRS and OAA numbers at second and third base. At shortstop, he has been below average, but with CJ Abrams being the everyday shortstop, Vargas is a suitable backup there.

While this move does not necessarily guarantee a roster spot for Vargas on Opening Day in 2024, it does provide him with financial security and at least guarantees him a spot through spring training.
