Quick Notes: Post Games Quotes from Dave Martinez, Victor Robles, Josiah Gray, and others

There were a lot of great quotes coming out of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Nationals were able to sweep the Diamondbacks and only allow one run over 18 innings. Not bad.

“We’ve noticed that he speeds up quite a bit and his mechanics get a little flawed,” Martinez explained. “So, it’s just for me and him — [Pitching Coach Jim] Hickey has been talking to him about breathing a little bit more, taking some more time, talking to our catchers and tell him, ‘Hey, slow down a little bit.’ - Davey Martinez about right-handed starter Joan Adon needing to learn to slow things down on the mound in difficult, or high-leverage situations.

“For me, he’s understanding how to pitch, not just throwing the baseball... He understands in certain situations what he needs to do to get outs. And that’s a good thing... Last year he threw the ball hard,” Martinez added. “We all knew that. Sometimes he fell in love with his breaking ball and got away from his fastball. ... Now he’s utilizing both, and he’s throwing them both in and out, and throwing 2-0 breaking balls for strikes, and that’s good, and I know that is going to help his growth a lot.” Davey Martinez on Josiah Gray's second start of the season, and where he saw the righty improve between last season and the start of this year.

“He’s getting better... The biggest thing when he throws it is he’s got to throw it for strikes. I don’t know if you guys can remember, he threw a lot of short ones earlier, and we told him if you’re going to throw it, you got to throw it for strikes, and you’ve got to throw it early in the count, I like when he throws it early in the count, especially on certain hitters, and he did that well today.” - Dave Martinez about Josiah Gray’s use of the breaking ball.

“Awesome... Like I said, he’s working hard, and it’s good to see him get rewarded with a double after all the work he’s put in. I think one at-bat, the pitch they called a strike on him was ... not very good, and the last at-bat the guy came back with a sinker away, caught the plate, so ... but he’s having good at-bats, he’s seeing pitches, his swings are a lot better. He’s missing some balls now ... but like I said, keep swinging, swings are good. I really like where he’s at, and I think he’s only going to get better.” Dave Martinez about Victor Robles RBI during the doubleheader

“We talk a lot about the mental aspect of the game... not only hitting, but [pitching] as well, pitching and hitting both, and for me, it’s very important. Especially when you’re young. Learn how to control your heartbeat. We’re trying to teach these guys to do that on the mound. Because I played the game a long time, and in situations where you have the bases loaded, or you have a chance to drive in a winning run, man, your heartbeat starts going, and you’ve got to learn to control yourself and stay in the moment.” - Dave Martinez about the mental aspect of baseball.

“I was just a lot more confident out there, and I saw the weather was very cold. And a lot of times, the hitters don’t want to swing when it’s a cold climate,” He earned his first career win, calling it “very grand” through a big smile, and combated the temperature by gripping a hand warmer in his back pocket. “... I was just trying to take advantage of that and pound the zone.” RHP Joah Adon about his pitching performance Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Spanish through a team interpreter via Washington Post

“I don’t focus on my personal numbers at all... As long as I feel good out there and the team’s winning, that’s all that matters at the end of the day. I know those numbers will be there.” Outfielder Victor Robles about his struggles at the plate and his RBI during Tuesday's doubleheader against the Arizona Diamondbacks via Washington Post.

“[The] scouting report was attack them, things like that... Command and control of it wasn’t as great as I wanted it the first time around, but we adjusted.” RHP Josiah Grays of leaning on his fastball via Washington Post.
