On July 31, 2021, GM Mike Rizzo made six trades to start the Washington Nationals' re-tool, here is how those players are doing.
Last summer the Washington Nationals officially entered their "re-build" or "re-tool" or whatever you want to call it. Here is an update on the state of the six trades that Mike Rizzo made at the July 31, 2021 deadline:
Of the 8 players traded by the Washington Nationals, only SS Trea Turner remains with the team he was traded to.
The other 7:
- Max Scherzer traded to the LA Dodgers, now with the New York Mets
- Brad Hand was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays now with the Philadelphia Phillies
- Kyle Schwarber was traded to the Boston Red Sox, now with Philadelphia Phillies
- Daniel Hudson was traded to San Diego Padres, now with the Los Angeles Dodgers
- Yan Gomes traded to Oakland Athletics, now with the Chicago Cubs
- Josh Harrison traded to Oakland Athletics, now with the Chicago White Sox
- Jon Lester was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals now retired.
12 players received in return, half are in the majors right now:
- Keibert Ruiz
- Josiah Gray
- Lane Thomas
- Riley Adams
- Mason Thompson (though currently on 10-day IL)
- Donovan Casey (just promoted from minors to replace Dee Strange-Gordon on 10-day IL)
Of the 6 others, 4 are on the Washington Nationals' "Top 30 Prospects" list at numbers 7, 11, 20, and 28.
The other 2 had been on the list in the high 20s but just dropped off when the latest was posted. All 12 players received in the trades remain with the Washington Nationals.
