Game 1 Storylines and Notes

The Senators and Fightin Phils open their second and final series of the season against each other tonight, Tuesday, July 21st at FNB Field. The Sens and Fightin Phils played a six game series earlier this season at the end of May. The Senators took 4 of 6 games from the Fightins in that series.

The Senators come into play this evening in 3rd place in the Southwest Divison standings, 3.5 games behind the Erie SeaWolves. The Senators are 5-3 at home in the second half. The SeaWolves have already played this afternoon and lost 7-6 in extra innings again the Chesapeake Baysox so the Sens have an opportunity to pick up a game this evening. The Senators are winners of 2 straight and 6-4 in their last 10 games.

The Senators will hand the ball to opener Thomas Schultz, who is coming off back to back relief appearances where he has struggled a bit. He will look to bounce back and get back to form as he’s been fantastic for a large part of the season. The Sens are hopeful Schultz can get them an inning or two before turning the ball over to their distance pitcher tonight.

The Reading Fighting Phils will counter with Philadelphia Phillies #13 prospect Jean Cabrera. Cabrera last pitched over a week ago against Somerset throwing 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and walking 2. Cabrera has struggled at times this season, especially in the month of May and June. He will be making his 10th appearance for the Fightin Phils this evening.

Reading comes into tonight’s game tied for 1st place in the Northeast Division standings at 13-8. They have won 2 straight games and are 6-4 in their last 10 as well. Reading is 8-4 away from First Energy Stadium in the 2nd half, which is tied with Chesapeake for the Eastern League lead.

Harrisburg Senators vs. New Hampshire Fisher Cats
LAST GAME RECAP

After dropping Game 1 of the 3 game set against New Hampshire, the Senators finished the weekend on a high note to once again earn a series win. The pitching staff was phenomenal in the series finale on Sunday. Washington Nationals RHP Jake Irvin rehabbed through 4 2/3 of 1 hit baseball, striking out 5. Chance Huff came in and threw 3 pitches getting the Senators out of the 5th inning. Josh Randall came in and pitched a rare 4 inning relief appearance to get some post All Star break work in. All three pitchers combined on a 3 hitter. The offense mustered up 7 hits and did just enough to put a couple runs across on the board that would be plenty on this day for the Sens pitching staff. Devin Fitz-Gerald and Caleb Lomavita were the stars of the offense accounting for 5 of the teams 7 hits. Johnathan Thomas also scored on an overthrown pick off attempt at second base. Thomas’s speed was too much for the New Hampshire CF to throw him out added the second run of the game for the Sens and a big insurance run. The Sens would go onto win Game 3 2-0 and win the series 2 games to 1 over the Fisher Cats.
