Game 2 Storylines and Notes

The Sens and Flying Squirrels return to FNB Field tonight for Game 2 of the current chapter of their Southwest Division rivalry. The Flying Squirrels have had the Sens number in the seven games they’ve played, winning five. This number will have to change if the Senators expect to contend for the Division title in the second half. The Sens won’t have to finish first place in the division should current leader, Richmond, go onto win it again in the second half. Keeping pace with Richmond is a good goal to have because this year it appears it will land you in the top half of the division. First things first though, the Sens have some things to figure out, especially offensively. The Sens have four hits in their last 18 innings of baseball. That’s not going to cut that here, or anywhere in baseball. The Senators need to find a consistent stroke if they’re going to reach some of their second half team goals.
The Sens come into tonight’s game 3-3 in the second half and 37-38 overall for the year. They’re also losers of two straight and are 4-6 in their last 10 games. The Flying Squirrels come into game two with the best record in the Eastern League at 6-1 in the second half and 49-26 overall. Richmond has won 3 straight games. We’ll continue to get a good glimpse into how the second half of the season is going to go for the Sens, who have already fallen 2.5 back, the rest of this series.

LAST GAME RECAP

The Sens handed the ball to Mr. Reliable, Josh Randall last evening and like he’s done so many times in his AA tenure, he didn’t disappoint. Randall mowed through a tough Flying Squirrels Lineup with 1-2-3 innings in the first two frames and retired 9 of the first 10 batters that he faced. Unfortunately, Randall faced some trouble when he made it to the forth. Richmond’s Parks Harber smoked a ball off of the wall over his left field counterpart, Sam Petersen’s head for a one out double. Next up was birthday boy, Charlie Szykowny, who made Randall pay on the first pitch of the at bat. Randall left a fast ball middle in and Szykowny cranked it. The only question on this ball was if it was fair and according to home plate umpire Drew Boffeli it snuck inside the right field foul pole. Randall would go on to only allow one more run in his 7 innings. His line finished up allowing 3R, 6H, 1BB, 7Ks on 89 pitches. Randall is scheduled to pitch Game 6 of the series and will get another crack at Richmond.
The story of the game was the Senators offense, or lack thereof, struggling to hit consistently through another baseball game. The Sens mustered only three hits in last night’s ball game and still managed to get the tying run to third base, where Johnathan Thomas would end up stranded to end the game. Senators start Cayden Wallace had two of the Sens three hits on the evening. Caleb Lomavita tallied the other. The Sens left 5 guys on base and were 0-8 with runners in scoring position. Simply put, that’s the story. The story of the season, the story the Senators are undoubtedly working hard to fix. The pitching has kept them in game after game but the offense has not yet found it’s consistent stride for more than a few games at a time.
Harrisburg Senators Schedule
On Deck…

The Sens will turn to starter Issac Lyon for tomorrow night’s Game 3. Lyon has pitched exceptionally well of late. His last two starts have been his best two of his brief AA tenure. He won his first start two weeks ago against the Erie SeaWolves. He’s worked his ERA down over 3 points in his last several starts. Richmond hands the ball to LHP Cesar Perdomo, who last pitched against the Sens twice in their previous series. He handled the Sens lineup in the first start and the Sens used the long ball against him in his second start of the series tallying three long balls off of him. First pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 6:30 PM from FNB Field.
