Game 3 Storylines and Notes

With the series knotted at one game a piece the Sens and Flying Squirrels meet for Game three of six tonight at FNB Field. The Sens hand the ball to Issac Lyon looking to build off a impressive two game swing where he’s pitched tremendously well. Lyon will make his seventh start of the season in game three. His last two starts have been his best. He last pitched three outings ago against Richmond in their previous series. Richmond got to him pretty good and chased him a bit chasing him after 4 innings and allowing three runs. Lyon took the loss in the game. The best from him has followed since that game so tonight will be a good measuring stick of where Lyon truly is against a Richmond lineup who has as dominant 1-5 lineup as anyone.

Richmond hands the ball to LHP Cesar Perdomo, who the Sens faced twice last series. In the first game he was unhittable only allowing 1 hit through seven innings. During the finale of the series the Sens were able to get the best of him and chase him after four innings. Perdomo is constantly around the plate and walks virtually nobody, only allowing free passes to four batters in the entire month of June (5 starts).

Tonight’s starting lineups are below. It will be a scorching hot evening for baseball at FNB Field but the boys will battle on. Senators and Flying Squirrels for Thursday night baseball on City Island. First pitch is coming up at 6:30.

Flying Squirrels - Senators Game Two
LAST GAME RECAP

The Sens got something they’ve been looking for and needed for a few games now. All facets of their game playing well at the same time. The pitching staff pitches well and the offense provides run support. Seems easy enough, right? It has happened at times this season but not consistently enough. Nationals’ prospect Sam Petersen got the party started in the home half of the second inning. Petersen smacked Yunior Marte’s 0-1 pitch to deep right over the right field bullpen and onto the boardwalk. Max Romero Jr, who walked, would be driven in by Leandro Pineda a few batters later to take a 2-0 lead. Richmond would finally get to Alex Clemmey, who cruised through the first four innings with the exception of a trio of walks, in the 5th inning. In this visitor’s half of the 5th Jack Payton singled and would be sacrificed to 2nd on a bunt by Jean Carlos Sio. Zane Zielinski would single and drive in Payton to get Richmond on the board. Clemmey would battle back and get out of the inning. The Sens offense would go quietly the next few innings and the Flying Squirrels would knot things up at 2 on an absolute no doubter off of the right field video board.

The Senators pitching staff would go onto shut the door for the remainder of the evening and let the offense go to work. The offense responded in a big way. The sequence started off with a Devin Fitz-Gerald double, followed by a Cayden Wallace single and Sam Petersen was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Romero Jr up next was also hit to drive in the go ahead run. The Sens weren’t done there. TJ White poked a seeing eye bloop single that found a spot of green in between Richmond fielders to drive in Wallace and Petersen. A few batters later Cortland Lawson would join the runs party with a 2 run single scoring Romero Jr and White. Sens took a 7-2 lead into the 9th, which was too much to conquer on this night, even for a team who has made a habit of crazy 9th inning comebacks this year.

Clemmey pitched well and was in line to get the win making it through 5 innings. Clemmey finished with a line of 1R, 3H, 4BB and 4Ks on 87 pitches. After allowing the tying run the Sens bullpen would finish the job Clemmey started. Jared Simpson, Seth Shuman and Holden Powell would combine to pitch 4 innings, allowing 1R on 3H, 2BB and striking out 3 to preserve the win in front of a heat braving crowd of 1,367 fans.

Washington Nationals Schedule
On Deck…

Fourth of July Weekend Baseball all weekend on City Island! America, Baseball and Fireworks. There’s nothing better! The Sens and Flying Squirrels will play Game 4 of their series Friday night at FNB Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM. The Sens will hand the ball to recently promoted, Riley Maddox, to make his AA and Senators debut. Maddox was drafted in the 8th round of the 2025 MLB Draft and has been pitching very well for A+ Wilmington of late. He made 15 appearances this year for the Blue Rocks, starting 14 of those games. He’s pitched 74 innings and has a 4-5 record and a 4.14 ERA.

The Flying Squirrels will hand the ball to LHP Greg Farone. In the month of June Farone has been hit pretty hard by his opponents and struggled with control. He’s pitched 21 innings, allowing 17R, 24H, 5HR, 15BB and 16Ks this month. Despite his recent numbers he did get the win in his last appearance against the Sens in their last series.
