ROCHESTER, NY- After suffering a heartbreaking loss the night before in 12 innings, the Rochester Red Wings discovered their bats were just as hot as today’s 100-degree temperature. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders arrived in Rochester on Tuesday, having not lost a game since the Fourth of July. They quickly realized that this was not the same Red Wings team they faced in April and May. Rochester has taken two of the first three games in a six-game series—and if not for an extremely controversial umpire call in the bottom of the 11th, Rochester might have won all three.

Game Highlights

Today’s game began at 11:05 a.m., with numerous youth camp groups in the crowd cheering on their beloved Red Wings. If you love home runs, this was the game to watch.

Spencer Jones, the Yankees' #2 prospect, opened the scoring early with a 401-foot homer to left-center, putting Scranton ahead 1-0. In the bottom of the first, Robert Hassell III responded by leading off with a home run to left field, tying the game 1-1. The RailRiders jumped back in front when Jose Rojas hit a solo shot over the pavilion in right field, making it 2-1 Scranton. Rochester answered quickly: in the bottom of the second, Nick Schnell tied things up 2-2 with a solo homer to center. Rochester took the lead later that inning, scoring two more runs on a single by Hassell to make it 4-2.

The fireworks continued as Spencer Jones hit his second home run of the day, this time a 425-foot blast over the center field fence. In the bottom of the third, Jose Tena added to the home run parade with his third of the season, bringing the tally to six solo home runs in a row. In the fourth, Andres Chapparo provided more cushion for Rochester, delivering a two-run homer and giving the Red Wings an 8-3 lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.

Late-Inning Drama

Spencer Jones wasn’t done, as he cracked his third home run of the day with a towering 433-foot line drive to center field, narrowing Rochester’s lead to 8-5. Holden Powell relieved Bryce Connelly and struggled, walking all three batters he faced. Seth Shuman then emerged from the bullpen; after allowing a single to Jeimer Candelario that closed the gap to 8-6, Shuman regained command and struck out the next two hitters to keep Rochester in front. He finished with 1.2 innings pitched, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Nick Schnell hit his second home run of the day—his 13th of the season—in the seventh inning, capping a game that featured nine home runs in total.

Key Stats & Streaks

The Red Wings’ bullpen held strong, securing a 10-8 victory. Shuman was credited with the win. YoYo Morales doubled in the game, and both Morales and Schnell have now reached base in 17 consecutive games. The season’s longest on-base streak for Rochester is 18 games by Daylen Lile. Rob Hassell III finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Both Darren Baker and Nick Schnell recorded multi-hit games. Since being sent to Rochester on June 18, Hassell is hitting .336 with an OPS over .950, while playing outstanding center field.
