Rochester Red Wings Report: Rochester Red Wings end of the 2022 season summary.

Even though the Rochester Red Wings season has been over, the 2022 season saw many Washington Nationals prospects excel over the season.

The Rochester Red Wings season has been over for close to a month. However, the 2022 season saw many prospects make an impact at the Triple-A level.

With their September 10 loss, the Red Wings were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention as they fell to 58-76 on the year, this marks the 8th consecutive season the Rochester Red Wings have missed the playoffs, the second-longest playoff drought since at least 1933. Rochester held at least a share of first place in the International League-East for 40 days.

Awards

Three Red Wings received International League recognition this season. SS Luis Garcia won IL of the Week, RHP Cade Cavalli was awarded IL Pitcher of the Week, and 3B Jake Alu was named IL Player of the Month.

SS Luis Garcia was named the International Player of the Week on April 17 after leading the league in hits (14), batting average (.519), and total bases over the six-game span from April 12-17. Garcia racked up two doubles, two triples, and a home run with five RBIs.

RHP Cade Cavalli was awarded Pitcher of the Week on July 10 after allowing just two hits and striking out seven through seven innings on July 7 at LHV…Cavalli had retired the first 17 batters he faced in the outing in a start that matched his longest of the year (three times).

3B Jake Alu batted .409/.442/.761 and led the league in RBIs (25), total bases (67), slugging percentage (.761), and OPS (1.203)in the month of September. Alu ranked second among International League hitters in average (.409), hits (36), and home runs (7) and was fourth in doubles (8) and runs (21) over the span. Alu recorded 13 multi-hit games and hit safely in his last 14 games of the year.

Team Stats

Managerial Success Manager Matt LeCroy eclipsed 700 managerial wins in 2022 when his Red Wings squad defeated Scranton/WB on June 17. Matt LeCroy, the 11-year Minor League manager, would accumulate 730 managerial wins by the season’s end. LeCroy has collected 121 wins with Low-A Hagerstown, 68 with High-A Potomac, 425 with Double-A Harrisburg, and 116 with Triple-A Rochester. LeCroy, in two seasons with Rochester, has amassed a 117-158 record (.425 win %)

Losing Streak & Winning Streak: The Rochester Red Wings had a franchise-record losing streak of 19 games from 7/16-8/10. However, the Rochester Red Wings went on a 9-game win streak from 5/7-5/15 for the first time since 1992, tying Columbus for the second-longest win streak among Minor League clubs in the 2022 season. The Red Wings outscored their opponents 57-28 during the streak…meanwhile, Rochester’s bullpen surrendered just eight earned runs over 41.1 innings of work (1.74 ERA).

Pitching for the future: Under new pitching coaching Rafael Chaves, Red Wing's pitchers struck out 1,341 batters, recording a new franchise record surpassing their 2019 total of 1,285, which they accomplished in 140 games. The pitching rotation recorded 1,291 in 141 games, setting the new record with nine games left in their season. Their strikeout total was good enough for seventh-most among International League teams, 80 punchouts behind first-place Gwinnett (ATL).

Dyanamic Duo: RHP Cade Cavalli and Logan Verrett accounted for 23% of the strikeouts in June and 15% in August.

The National's number-one pitching prospect made his highly anticipated Major League Baseball debut on August 26th after shining for the Red Wings in 2022. In 20 starts with the Red Wings, Cavalli threw 97 innings and worked to a 3.71 ERA with 104 strikeouts. His four quality starts rank second among all Wings pitchers.

Additionally, RHP Cade Cavalli..

  • ... ranked 20th on the IL strikeout leaderboard with 104 tickets punched, two spots ahead of his teammate RHP Logan Verrett who registered 102.
  • ... was awarded Pitcher of the Week on July 10 after allowing two hits and striking out seven through seven innings on July 7 at LHV. Cavalli had retired the first 17 batters he faced in the outing in a start that matched his longest of the year (three times).
