Rochester Red Wings Report: The Trade Deadline and Other Matters

The trade deadline in AAA is weird because it could be and mean many things, and a lot depends on how good the parent club is.

For the Red Wings, the affiliate of sellers like the Nationals,it means both people coming and people going. It's unlikely anyone on the Red Wings will get traded (although somebody getting put in as a throw-in in a deal is always possible), but they still will lose players, as AAA players get called up to fill voids left when MLB players get traded.

You could see this in these last two days. When Jesse Winker got traded away, Alex Call got the call-up (no pun intended). As I wrote this, Lane Thomas was sent to Cleveland, and Travis Blankenhorn got the call.

It also could mean new faces, though. Jose Tena was acquired in the Thomas deal, and will soon be in Rochester. Others acquired in the deals may one day also pass through Rochester.

Some people leave, and some people arrive. And the season rolls on...

More Notes:

  • Blankenhorn was called up while having the hottest stretch of the season- he had four home runs in his last three games.

  • The Red Wings ultimately split their big series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, and are now 1.5 games back of the Columbus Clippers for the second half lead.

  • The coming series with the Omaha Storm Chasers is a rare second-straight home series, meaning a two-week home stand.

  • Darren Baker stolen base watch: he's at 31 so far this season, three behind Scranton's Brandon Lockridge.

  • RHP Rico Garcia save watch: 16, tied for the league lead.

  • In the spirit of the Olympics, it's time to note that Red Wings manager Matt LeCroy was a member of the 1996 Olympic team as a collegiate in Atlanta, where he won a bronze.
