(Bowie, Maryland) — June 26, 2026 — For the second night in a row it was one of the catchers that got the Harrisburg Senators rolling via the long ball. This time it was Nationals Top 30 catching prospect, Caleb Lomavita. With Sam Petersen on first thanks to a catcher’s interference call, Caleb Lomavita crushed an 0-2 breaking ball that was left out over the plate. Lomavita didn’t miss it and crushed it off the left field scoreboard. The blast in the second was the first big hit of the evening off of the bat of Lomavita. Teammate and Co-MVP of the game, Sam Petersen ripped a rock down the left field line for a 2 run double to make the Senators comfortable with a 4-0 lead. Chesapeake would strike back two innings later when Ethan Anderson absolutely crushed 1-0 Issac Lyon pitch to cut the Sens lead in half.
Enter Caleb Lomavita from stage right with runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs in the 7th. Lomavita went the other way down the right field line on the first pitch of the at bat. Baysox RF Thomas Sosa misplayed the ball off of the wall and both runs scored and Caleb scampered safely into third with a two run triple. Prospect Devin Fitz-Gerald drive in a run on an RBI single in the 8th to seal the deal. The Senators offense had their third straight consistent game at the plate with a 10 hit out burst.
Not to be out done by the offense, the Senators pitching staff had themselves a fine evening. Starter Issac Lyon followed up on his best outing of the season with a fine performance where he only really made one bad pitch. Ethan Anderson made Lyon pay on his two run bomb in the fifth, which was his only blemish on the night. A Senators throwing error on the next at bat brought the tying run to the plate. It would force Sens Skipper Delino DeShields hand and he’d go get Lyon before he could register the final out in the 5th, exempting him from getting the win. Lyon would finish his evening with 4 2/3 IP, 2R, 4H, 2BB, 6Ks on 82 pitches. Lyon’s bullpen mates would be more than up to the task to preserve the win he just missed out on. Alex Young, who got his first win with the Sens, Billy Sullivan, Thomas Schultz and Chance Huff would keep the Baysox offense at bay to assist in Lyon’s effort. The bullpen would toss 4 1/3 innings allowing only 1 run to finish out the five run victory for the Sens.
Catchers Bring The Offense
On many baseball teams your catchers are the leaders of the defense and what offense comes from their bats you count as an added bonus. That’s not the case for this Harrisburg Senators team. In fact in a majority of their games this season, Max Romero Jr and Caleb Lomavita have alternated catching and DH duties to keep both bats in the lineup. There has been quite a few games prior to the last two that the catchers were the stars of the show offensively. Lomavita is hitting .284 with 7HR and 20RBIs in the month of June. He’s raised his average from .215 in the beginning of June to .241 average to date. Meanwhile, Romero Jr is hitting only .234 with 6 home runs for the month but this is mostly due to a rough 2-20 series a week ago against Erie. Romero is currently hitting .271, slugging .578 and his OPS is an incredible .962. The Sens will need continued production from their catchers to keep the offense on an upward trajectory.
