Series Preview: Colorado Rockies vs. Washington Nationals (September 17, 2021 - September 19, 2021)

Friday, September 17, RHP Josiah Gray (0-2, 6.00 ERA) vs. RHP German Marquez (12-10, 3.93 ERA) | First Pitch: 7:05 pm

Gray gets the first start for the Nationals in this series looking to rebound from his last two starts. He has given up 11 runs in two starts this month. Even the start before that against Philadelphia he gave up six runs. So combined over three starts and 12 innings, that is 17 runs given up. Gray will need to keep working to find his early form for Washington.

Marquez gets the start for Colorado Friday and has really started September strong. In two starts he has pitched 11 innings and given up only two earned runs against Atlanta and Philadelphia. Over the course of his career, Marquez has faced Washington three times with a 2-1 record and an ERA of 6.50. He has also averaged six innings of work in those starts.

Saturday, September 18, LHP Patrick Corbin (8-14, 5.98 ERA) vs. LHP Kyle Freeland (5-8, 4.76 ERA) | First Pitch: 4:05 pm

Corbin gets the ball in game two and has started off September in a solid manner. In August, Corbin posted a 7.88 ERA over six starts so it is promising that he has pitched seven innings in both September starts giving up five runs total. Corbin has gotten to face the Rockies 23 times in his career with a 10-4 record and ERA of 4.51.



Lefty Kyle Freeland gets the start for Colorado on Saturday to face fellow lefty Corbin. Freeland has already made three starts this month, but did leave his September 1st start in the second inning due to injury. He has given up seven runs and four runs in his other two full starts this month giving him a 9.53 ERA. Freeland has faced the Nationals four times in his career with an ERA of 2.49.

Sunday, September 19, RHP Paolo Espino (4-5, 4.18 ERA) vs. RHP Ryan Feltner (0-1, 11.37 ERA) | First Pitch: 1:05 pm

For the final game of the series, the Nationals are pitching Paolo Espino. Espino has had a decent start to September but has had very solid strikeout numbers. He has struck out five, seven, and six in his last three starts this month. This will be Paolo’s first career start against the Rockies in his four-year career.

The Rockies will be pitching their rookie call-up, Ryan Feltner, for the third game of this series. So far he has faced Atlanta and Philadelphia in his two starts, giving up six and two runs respectively. Feltner features a four pitch arsenal of four seam, slider, changeup, and a curveball.

At 68-78, the Rockies are 4th in the NL West, 27 games behind the Giants.
Prior to the final game in Atlanta, the Rockies have won 5 out of their last 6.
First baseman C.J. Cron leads the Rockies in home runs, RBI, and OBP.

The Rockies team ERA is 4.77, led by starter German Marquez’s 3.93 ERA.
