Series Preview: Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers (May 20-22, 2022)

Friday, May 20: RHP Erick Fedde (2-2, 4.24 ERA) vs LHP Eric Lauer (3-1, 2.60 ERA) | First Pitch: 8:10 PM ET

Erick Fedde makes his first career start at American Family Field, and this will also be his first game against the bulk of their lineup. He has 15 plate appearances versus Andrew McCutchen, who will probably be activated today from the COVID IL, according to MLB writer Adam McCalvy. Although Fedde has only given up three hits to McCutchen, two have been for extra bases. Fedde’s ERA estimators caught up to him against Houston, but he should look to bounce back here.

The Nationals have faced Eric Lauer four times, most recently on Aug. 21, 2021, where he struggled. The Lauer they saw then is not quite the same as the one they will see tonight. Lauer has seen increased velocity and command, with lower walk rates and much higher strikeout rates. His 90.9% left on base percentage is completely unsustainable, but so is the amount of his fly balls that turn into home runs.

This game is televised on MASN 2 and can be listened to on 106.7 The Fan.

Saturday, May 21: LHP Patrick Corbin (0-6, 6.28 ERA) vs RHP Brandon Woodruff (4-2, 5.35 ERA) | First Pitch: 7:10 PM ET

Patrick Corbin was cruising in his last start until the Astros remembered who they were. Three home runs and five runs later, Corbin’s ERA ballooned to 6.28. He still shows positive signs that he could at least be a decent starter, a massive improvement from his 2020 and 2021 campaigns.

Brandon Woodruff was the Brewers starter in the 2019 NL Wild Card Game. Since then, Woodruff has been one of the more productive starters in baseball. He is seventh in MLB in FanGraphs’ fWAR since 2020. Despite already being a top pitcher, his pitches, specifically his changeup, have improved this year. His numbers have not been excellent so far this season, but he (like Corbin) is going to be better than their numbers suggest so far.

Sunday, May 22: RHP Aaron Sanchez (2-3, 7.94 ERA) vs RHP Freddy Peralta (3-1, 3.53 ERA) | First Pitch: 2:10 PM

Aaron Sanchez continues to slide down the ERA leaderboard. He has the fourth worst ERA in baseball of all pitchers with 20 innings pitched. Like many Nationals starters, he has been getting BABIP’d and unlucky with his strand rates. While their results may improve over a larger sample size, it feels like a broader team flaw rather than Sanchez’s fault. But maybe Sanchez is not a major-league-caliber pitcher anymore.

Despite bad career numbers against the Nationals, one should expect Peralta to fix that this start. His 3.53 ERA does not tell the complete story, because has a FIP hovering around 2.00 and an xERA under 3.00. Peralta is just one of the many dominant starters on the Brewers’ pitching staff, which is frankly one of, if not the best, in the league.

This game is televised on MASN 2 and can be listened to on 106.7 The Fan.

Other Notes:

  • The Milwaukee Brewers are 24-14 and winning the NL Central.

  • Their star shortstop Willy Adames just went on the injured list with a sprained ankle.

  • Their lineup ranks eighth in the league in OPS.

  • Christian Yelich is barreling the ball more than ever but is not seeing the expected results (.337 wOBA and a .397 xwOBA).

  • Even though they are one of the best home run hitting teams in the league, the Brewers also steal a lot of bags.
