Driving the day at the Nats Report
Here are some top stories we're tracking in the Nats Report Newsroom
Yesterday was the first bullpen session in West Palm, featuring similar faces, such as MacKenzie Gore, Trevor Williams, Jose A. Ferrer, and Eduardo Salazar). There were semi-forgotten faces (Cade Cavalli, Joan Adon) and some new faces (Jarlin Susana, Evan Reifert, Tyler Stuart, Clay Helvey.) According to media reports, all eyes will be on newly signed Japanese pitcher Shinnosuka Ogasawara, the first Japanese free agent to sign with the team, appearing in a Nationals uniform and planning to throw off the mound. Ogaswara signed a two-year, $3.5 million contract three weeks ago, has already met with his manager, has been adjusting to the pitch clock, and has gotten strong praise from Martinez.
During a media session yesterday, Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo announced that Travis Sykora, a top-100 pitching prospect, will miss Spring Training due to a hip injury today.
Hip injuries in pitchers can be problematic. While they may not severely restrict mobility, they can lead to altered mechanics, potentially reducing performance and increasing the risk of further injury. This is a setback for Sykora, but given his limited minor-league experience, facing some early adversity could benefit him. Sykora appeared in 20 games last season with the Fredericksburg Nationals and finished the season with a 5-3 record, a 2.33 ERA, and registered 129 strike-out over 85.0 innings pitched. He also finished the season with a 0.91 WHIP. He was considered one of the best pitching prospects in the Nationals minor leagues, and the general thought was that he would be making some serious waves down in the minors this season.
