Today is April 2, 2020.

It is the day that the Washington Nationals the 2019 World Series Champions were supposed to kick off at home the defense of their championship, raise a banner in front of a sold-out crowd at Nationals Park and just have another moment part of many over the past few months for fans and players to celebrate the improbable story of last years team. BUT we are all stuck at home re-watching highlights and games of last season due to the Coronavirus and the delay of the 2020 baseball season.

I love Opening Day. I have my rituals, from washing my favorite Washington Nationals hoodie to putting on my custom Nationals jersey and lastly raising my own Curly W red flag in front of my house to let everyone on my block that baseball is back for summer. Instead, my flag remains tucked away and the jersey that I wore throughout the playoffs and the World Series will remain in my closet on the same hanger not touched since the cold night in October when the Nationals became World Series Champions.

I’ve been a Washington Nationals fan since the team moved back to D.C. and attended many baseball games at R.F.K. Waiting for the 2020 baseball season to start has been a lesson in patience. Since that cold night on the last night of October of last year, I have been waiting for the offseason to end and for baseball to once again return to the nation's capital where it belongs.

The other day I tuned in to MLBTV.com and tried to re-watch Game 6 of last year’s World Series or even the Wild Card game, but it was hard. It was hard to watch because as much as that moment in time was magical there is no baseball to look forward to.

Adam Eaton will not come to the plate tomorrow as the first National to hit for the 2019 World Series Champions in 2020, there will be no Soto Shuffle, Trea Truner will not steal second base and be safe, there will be no Half Smokes with a cold beer to be had at Nationals Park at least for tomorrow.

Instead today, we are all stuck in our houses and dreaming of eating that Half Smoke with a cold beer. We will be dreaming of a piece of cloth in the shape of a flag being raised over the scoreboard in centerfield. We will be dreaming of that American flag being unfurled in centerfield and those two stars to the left and the right of the flag. Today, we will be dreaming of cheering our favorite Nationals as they come out of the first base dugout.

But today most importantly the Washington Nationals are still World Series Champions
