The New York Mets even up the NLCS as they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3. Thanks to a pair of homeruns from Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos, the series returns to the East Coast tied 1-1.
The New York Mets is the first team to have a leadoff homerun and a grand slam in the same game since the Baltimore Orioles accomplished this feat in Game 1 of the 1996 ALDS. According to Major League Baseball, since the League Championship series moved to its current format, the winner of the second game of the NLCS series has advanced to the World Series 23 times (59.0%)
Sean Manaea pitched 5.0 innings, giving up only three runs on two hits and striking out seven. Manea threw 87 pitches, 53 of them being strikes. Edwin Díaz got the save for the Mets, his second in the postseason. Díaz pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit, no runs, and striking out three. The Mets and Dodgers will now head to New York and play tomorrow, with the first pitch at 8:08 PM EDT.
RHP Walker Buehler (0-1; 10.80 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers, while RHP Luis Severino (1-0; 4.50 ERA) will take the mound for the Mets.
Last night in the Bronx, the New York Yankees showed why they are the favorites to win the ALCS against Cleveland. With last night's win, the Yankees improved to 4-1 in the postseason this year. LHP Carlos Rodón earned his first postseason win by working 6.0 innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with no walks and struck out nine.
Former Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto opened up the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning, his eighth career Postseason home run.
Giancarlo Stanton recorded his 13th career Postseason homerun with his solo homerun in the bottom of the seventh to give the Yankees a 5-1 lead. Stanton's home had a 114.3 exit velocity, the second-hardest hit homerun of the 2024 Postseason, behind a 116.5 MPH homer by Shohei Ohtani in the NLDS vs. San Diego.
Game two will be tonight with the first pitch at 7:38 p.m. EDT, with RHP Tanner Bibee (0-0, 2.08 ERA) taking the mound for the Guardians and RHP Gerrit Cole (1-0, 3.00 ERA) taking the mound for the Yankees.
Last night, the Salt River Rafters (3-2) had the night off and will return to action tonight as they face the Surprise Saguaros (2-4).
