Leading this Morning’s Briefing: Nationals are in third place in the NL East and more…

Well, don’t look now, but the Washington Nationals, wait, the “scrappy Nationals” are now currently in third Place in the NL East and occupy the final Wild Card spot in the National League. If the regular season would end today they would be in the playoffs. I’ll let that sink in for a minute. (I will have more on this in my upcoming Reporter's Note Book, so stay tuned for that!)

Yes, it’s only a month into the season, and there is much more baseball to be played, but watching baseball, specifically Nationals Baseball, has been fun. The team is never out, it seems, and with their win yesterday afternoon, the Nationals completed their 12th come-from-behind win of the season so far, which now leads the Major Leagues!  #StayinginTheFight is back and better than ever.

Today, the Nationals have the day off. They will return to baseball action tomorrow when they host the Baltimore Orioles for a mid-week Tuesday and Wednesday series and then head to Boston to face the Red Sox over the weekend.

In case you missed it, here are some of the game highlights from yesterday’s win:

  • Eddie Rosario blasted a two-run homer in the seventh inning that vaulted the Nationals to a 10-8 lead. The homer was part of a 2-for-4 day for Rosario in which he scored two runs.
  • Luis García Jr. went 4-for-4 with a solo home run, four RBI, a stolen base, and two runs. García Jr has now hit safely in five straight plate appearances going back to Saturday night’s game. He has reached base safely in nine of 11 plate appearances since his pinch-hit homer on Friday night and has also reached base safely in 14 straight games.
  • Jesse Winker gave the Nationals a 7-6 lead in the fourth inning with a three-run bomb off Alek Manoah. This homerun was Winker's fourth home run of the season, and the third came against a right-handed pitcher. Winker finished the game 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, three RBI, two walks, and two runs scored.

We asked, you answered.
