Leading this Morning’s Briefing: Nats split doubleheader

The Nationals may have split the doubleheader, but the offense was pitiful yesterday. Eddie Rosario notched the only extra-base hit, a double in game two. Sure, the team may have gotten 14 hits total, but the team mustered a collective 23.5 percent hard-hit rate. While that may work for Luis Arraez, it does not work for anyone else, let alone for a whole offense. For Erick Fedde to be the one of the pitchers to shut down the Nationals no less, it just feels poetic.

And Fedde shoved. Seven innings, six strikeouts, three hits, and zero runs. Only twice before that has Fedde thrown that at least that many innings, and struck out that many hitters. Once in 2021 against the Mets, and earlier this season against the Rays.

Props to Fedde, who remade himself as a pitcher in 2023 thanks to a pitching lab and a stint in the KBO. He is now on pace to have a career year in 2024. And while of course development is not linear and sometimes it takes different minds to see different fixes, but man is it a shame the Nationals could never figure it out with Fedde.

But the development machine has seemed to figure some things out with Mitchell Parker, who threw five innings, allowing three earned runs, and striking out just three hitters. While the outright dominance Parker started his career has worn off, he is still keeping the team in the game in his starts.

Jackson Rutledge was the extra player for the Nationals in the doubleheader. He threw one inning, struck out one batter, and allowed a home run.

The Nationals still have a chance to win the series, though. The Nationals will send LHP Patrick Corbin (1-3, 5.91 ERA) to face LHP Garrett Crochet (3-4, 4.63 ERA).
