Well, Washington Nationals fans, today marks an important day in Nationals history: the first World Series Win for the Nationals in 2019. Even though we are years removed from that amazing night, and when the Nationals take the field in 2025, they will have a completely different team. Still, in our hearts, we will never forget this day in Washington Nationals history when we FINISHED THE FIGHT!
Last night in the Bronx, the New York Yankees bats finally woke up, and thanks to the bottom of their order, they defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4. Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe hit his first home run of the World Series. Boy, was it special: a grand slam of former Washington Nationals pitcher Daniel Hudson in the bottom of the third inning broke things open for the Pinstripes.
Volpe's two-out grand slam in the third inning marked the 15th grand slam in Yankees Postseason history and the ninth in Yankees' World Series history. Former Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto reached base twice last night via a walk and a single in the eighth inning. Returning to Game 2 of the NL Wild Card Series with San Diego in 2022, Soto has reached base in his last 24 Postseason games. His current on-base streak is tied for the fifth-longest streak in Postseason history.
However, Freddie Freeman continued his amazing World Series by hitting another home run in the top of the first against Yankees right-handed pitcher Luis Gil. Gil pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits, and only struck out one.
Along with his home runs in Game 5 and 6 of the Braves’ 2021 World Series run, Freeman has homered in his last six World Series games, surpassing George Springer for the most consecutive World Series games with a home run. Springer had a homer in five straight games, including Games 4, 5, 6, and 7 in 2017 and Game 1 in 2019.
Freeman has hit a home run in the first four games in this World Series. He is the first player to hit a home run in each of the first four games of a World Series, surpassing Barry Bonds (2002) and Hank Bauer (1958),
Tonight, the Dodgers will play in the Bronx, with the first pitch at 8:08 p.m. EDT. RHP Gerrit Cole (1-0; 2.82 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees, while RHP Jack Flaherty will take the mound for the Dodgers, who look to clinch the World Series again.
