On Friday, the Detroit Tigers signed former Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch to become their newest manager. Friday's announcement came exactly one year after the Houston Astros lost in Game seven of the World Series against the Washington Nationals. Hinch played 27 games for the Tigers after Detroit purchased his contract from Cleveland at the end of Spring Training.

Hinch is coming off his one-year suspension from baseball for his involvement in the Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal. Hinch finished with a 481-329 record in five seasons as Astros manager. He won 101-plus games in each of his final three seasons, and he never finished with a losing record. [Read the full article here]

In other baseball news, the New York Mets have a new owner. Over the weekend, MLB approved the New York Mets' sale to hedge fund billionaire Steven Cohen.

On Friday, MLB owners have voted to approve billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen as the New York Mets' new owner.

MLB's ownership committee had already approved the proposed purchase of 95% of the Mets by Cohen's entity. Cohen needed 23 of the 30 clubs to sign off for the deal to be approved, and The Associated Press reported, citing a source, that the vote was 26-4.

The sale values the franchise at $2.4 billion to $2.5 billion.

The Mets' ownership group was headed by Fred Wilpon, his brother-in-law Saul Katz and Wilpon's son Jeff, the chief operating officer's chief operating officer. The Wilpon and Katz families will retain 5% of the team after the sale, which is expected to be finalized within the next ten days.
