Nats Slide Continues, Offense Slumping
⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH
After their sweep from the Atlanta Braves and 2 more losses, the Nats continued their slide yesterday moving their losing skid to 7 straight. With the trade deadline officially done and the Nats with a whole new offensive, starting pitching, and bullpen rotation, the month of August will practically decide the trajectory for the rest of the Nats season, starting with these last 2 games in the Philly season. After an extremely rough weekend series continuing on, it feels like they need to tie this series to have any momentum to push for a wild card position by the time September gets here. As the days continue be sure to keep an eye out on the new arms and offensive guys who are striving to fill in the holes left from the deadline.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
Now sitting at 55-60 on the year, it is right now or never for the Nats to push for a winning, possibly playoff-berthing season. Despite sitting in 4th in the NL East, 14 games back of the Braves who just swept them, the Nats are currently only 6 games out of a Wild Card spot. Despite losing some All-Star caliber players at the deadline, the Nats acquired what they needed most: bullpen arms. The offense has been outstanding all year until yesterday, and the starting pitching has done their job for the most part, it is now time to see if they can continue to execute a high level, and finally get some help from the relieving side of things to approach their first playoff appearance, or even first winning season since 2019.
Now that the trade deadline is officially over, the Nats original roster looks a little different, especially with the loss of All-Star starting pitcher Foster Griffin, 20+ homer and 70+ RBI first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. and 17 homer 48 RBI Curtis Mead all being traded away at the deadline. Despite receiving lots back in pitching value, the Nats did not see any major league hitters in return, meaning it is time for new young faces to step up to fill those 40 homers and 100+ RBIs. Luckily offense is not where the Nats are lacking particularly, with a pipeline and farm system of amazing hitters, such as Albimelec Ortiz, who made his season starting debut and crushed a homer last night. There is a lot of production to make up for with the losses of Garcia and Mead, but the Nats young, explosive offense should be able to make it work.
The Nats huge pitching rework as a result of the deadline comes in the form of 8 new pitchers, from young prospects to guys ready to get to work this week. The Nats acquired starting pitcher Connelly Early, who was having an amazing season for the Red Sox and hopes to try and fill Griffin’s shoes when he returns from IL this month. They also acquired Jake Bird, Will Dion, and Yovanny Cruz, all relieving arms who will make starts for the Nats in the near future, ready to make their impact on the team and repair the ever struggling bullpen down the stretch of the season. The Nats also acquired Jack Cebert, Ben Grable, Josh Hartle, Kendeglys Virguez and Joe Glassey, even more bullpen prospects who will begin to work their way through the Nats minor league system.

The Nats had a unique stance of almost "buying” while “selling” at this years trade deadline. Toboni more gave his thoughts on the decision the team decided to end up making and the future goals.
“Zooming out, what we're trying to thread the needle in doing is figure out a way to create this stable foundation over the long run while also giving ourselves a chance to win this year,” first-year president of baseball operations Paul Toboni said after the 6 p.m. ET Deadline on Monday. “I think it’s inherently tough to find those opportunities.”

The Nats offense was completely halted in yesterday’s game, leading to a 5-0 shutout to go down 0-2 in the Philly series. Currently on a 7 game losing streak, the Nats will take anything they can get in these next 2 away games before heading back home without a rest to face Cincinnati. In yesterday’s game, CJ Abrams was the only Nats player really able to get anything going and with the lack of All-Star James Wood who is assessing an injury from Monday’s game. As the offense is full of new names that haven’t played together this year, hopefully they are able to find some rhythm in Jake Irvin’s second start back since injury.

With another full slate of Nationals minor league baseball in the books yesterday, the Nats farm system continues to showcase why it remains one of the deepest in baseball. Fredericksburg strengthened its grip on first place in the Carolina League, Harrisburg opened the week with a strong road victory, while Rochester and Wilmington were unable to start their new series’ on a winning note. As August baseball begins heating up, every game becomes increasingly important with postseason races taking shape across the organization.
📊 THE BOX SCORE:
The Rochester Red Wings, the Nats Triple-A affiliate, fell to 63-44 on the year after dropping the opener of their series against the Railriders 8-3. Despite collecting eight hits, Rochester struck out 15 times and couldn't keep pace after the Railriders broke the game open in the middle innings. Riley Adams drove in two runs while Cayden Wallace continued his hot stretch with two doubles and an RBI.
The Harrisburg Senators, the Nats Double-A affiliate, improved to 52-49 on the season with a 2-1 win over the Baysox to begin the week. Kervin Pichardo provided the offense with a solo home run, while Harrisburg's pitchers limited the Baysox to just five hits. Starter Lyon earned the win after 6.2 strong innings before the bullpen closed out the victory.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks, the Nats High-A affiliate, slipped to 52-49 on the season after a 7-1 loss to the Cyclones. Wilmington managed just two hits despite drawing 10 walks, leaving numerous scoring opportunities on the bases. Top prospect Eli Willits reached base three times via walks, while Yeremy Cabrera accounted for the Blue Rocks' lone RBI.
The Fredericksburg Nationals, the Nats Single-A affiliate, improved to 63-39 on the year with an exciting 10-8 victory over the shorebirds. After surrendering three runs in the opening inning, the FredNats answered with six runs in the bottom half and never gave back up the lead. Coy James launched his 16th home run of the season and drove in three runs, while Luke Dickerson and Manuel Cabrera each added two RBIs in another balanced offensive performance.

The Nats four minor league affiliates have a combined 230-138 record on the season. Fredericksburg continues to lead the Carolina League North while Rochester remains atop the International League East.
