Daily Report From Rochester:
CHARLOTTE, NC. — The Rochester Red Wings dropped the opener of a six-game road series Tuesday night, falling 12–1 to the Norfolk Tides.
Despite a three-hit performance from rehabbing Nationals prospect Dylan Crews, the Red Wings were outmatched by a Tides offense that pounded out 12 runs on 13 hits.
Norfolk struck early and often, with Ryan Mountcastle launching a solo homer in the first inning to set the tone. The Tides added another run in the fourth, then erupted for three more in the fifth, capped by a 441-foot blast from catcher Samuel Basallo, his astronomical 22nd of the season.
A six-run sixth inning blew the game open. Basallo and Emmanuel Rivera each collected two RBIs in the frame, while Mountcastle drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run. Dylan Beavers added his second homer of the night in the eighth, followed by RBI doubles from Basallo and Rivera to extend the lead to 12–1.
Rochester’s lone run came in the seventh after Nasim Nuñez and Christian Franklin were hit by pitches. Nuñez swiped third, then scored on an RBI single from Crews, who finished the night 3-for-4.
Starter Bryce Conley allowed five earned runs over 5.0 innings. The bullpen struggled behind him, allowing seven more runs over the final three innings.
The Red Wings will look to bounce back in game two Wednesday night as Adrian Sampson faces Norfolk’s Kyle Brnovich. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. EDT.
