Daily Report From Rochester:

NORFOLK, VA — The Rochester Red Wings mounted a furious comeback in the late innings but ultimately fell just short, dropping Thursday afternoon’s game to the Norfolk Tides, 9-8.

Down 9-1 entering the seventh, Rochester clawed back with seven unanswered runs across the final three innings. Andrés Chaparro led the charge with two hits and three RBI, while Andrew Pinckney added two singles, two stolen bases, and an RBI.

Starting pitcher Riley Cornelio impressed in his Triple-A debut, striking out seven over 5.0 innings of three-run ball. The 2022 seventh-round pick allowed five hits and two walks in the outing.

The Tides jumped out to an early lead, sparked by a two-run homer from RF Jud Fabian in the first and a solo shot from CF Reed Trimble in the third. Livan Soto added a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch made it 5-1 before Barrero’s slam broke the game open at 9-1.

Rochester’s offense responded late. Jackson Cluff homered to lead off the eighth, followed by a string of hits and aggressive baserunning that saw the Wings pull within one run. Chaparro’s two-run single in the ninth made it 9-8, but the rally stalled with the tying run stranded.

Yohandy Morales chipped in three hits and a double, while J.T. Arruda added a two-RBI single in the ninth.

The Red Wings will look to bounce back Friday night. Norfolk will send Kyle Bradish to the mound, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. EDT.
