Triple-A Rochester Red Wings

Daily Report From Rochester:

ROCHESTER, NY. — The Rochester Red Wings slugged their way to a 10-8 win over the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Railriders Thursday afternoon in Downtown Rochester.

The Wings launched five home runs in the winning effort, including two from right fielder Nick Schnell, then solo shots from center fielder Robert Hassell III, third baseman José Tena, and first baseman Andrés Chaparro. The Red Wings weren’t only playing with the long ball, but they were also employing Moneyball tactics, getting on base through walks and hits. Rochester registered 12 hits in the game with five walks… every Red Wing reached base at least once in the game. Since the end of the MLB All-Star break, Rochester has punished opposing pitchers, scoring 44 runs over six games while scoring at least seven runs in four of the six games.

After falling behind early on a solo homer from New York Yankees top prospect Spencer Jones in the top half of the first inning, the Red Wings immediately answered back with a leadoff blast from Hassell III. Schnell would follow up on the Red Wings’ offensive attack by launching his first of what would be a two-home run day at the plate for him to knot the game up at two in the second inning. Rochester would take control of the game from then on out when Hassell III struck again with a two-run single in the same inning.

Jones homered three times for the RailRiders, finishing with five RBIs on the day. Jones, who some would say has an unorthodox stance at the plate, wowed the Rochester faithful when he blasted one over the center field wall for his third of the game — helping Scranton/WB trim the deficit to 8-6 in the 5th inning.

Rochester’s Bullpen would lock in after the nervousness of the 5th inning and the big day for Jones. Seth Shuman would come out of the bullpen and throw two scoreless frames while setting down four guys by the way of the K. Schnell would hit his second dinger of the game in the 7th, while Hassell III would keep his excellent day at the plate going with a single to drive in shortstop Nasim Nuñez in the 8th to add two key insurance runs for Rochester.

Zack Brzykcy would have some trouble in the ninth, but he would end up shutting the door after allowing an RBI single by third baseman Jeimer Candelario.

The Red Wings and Railriders are back in action Friday night. Erick Leal will start for the RailRiders and Cade Cavalli will head out to the mound for the Red Wings, looking to start a streak of good outings and get the attention of the Nationals front office. Game four of the series starts at 6:45 p.m. EDT.

Double-A Harrisburg Senators

Daily Report From Harrisburg:

HARRISBURG, PA. — The Harrisburg Senators couldn’t solve the pitching of the Akron Rubber Ducks Thursday night, resulting in a 3-0 shutout win for Akron.

Harrisburg’s starting pitcher, Kyle Luckham, had a bounce-back start by going six innings, scattering two hits and not allowing a run, but he would be left with a no-decision despite his great outing. Akron’s starter Dylan DeLucia was just as good as Luckham, maybe even better. He didn’t allow a run over seven innings of work.

The RubberDucks broke the scoreless tie in the 8th inning, taking advantage of two passed balls and an RBI triple by shortstop Angel Genao. Center fielder Jake Fox added an RBI single in the ninth to make it 3–0.

Harrisburg would go 0-5 with runners in scoring position (RISP). They also registered only three hits as a team. Shortstop Seaver King had the most impressive day at the plate for the Sens, hitting a double and stealing a base in the loss.

Both teams will be back on the field Friday night, starting a 7:00 p.m. EDT. It’s Christmas in July night at FNB Field, gates open at 6:00 p.m. EDT. On the field, Akron will send out righty Trenton Denholm, opposing him for Harrisburg will be Chance Huff.

High-A Wilmington Blue Rocks

Daily Report From Wilmington:

JERSEY SHORE, NJ. — The Wilmington Blue Rocks squandered a 1st-inning lead and could never fight back into the game as they dropped this one to the Jersey Shore BlueClaws 5-4 Thursday night at ShoreTown Ballpark.

Wilmington got out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st-inning before being outscored the rest of the game and allowing a costly throwing error, which would make the difference in the one-run loss.

Errors were the story of this game, with five being committed by both teams combined. Wilmington would be the beneficiary of one in the 1st-inning, when catcher Caleb Lomavita hit a bloop single to right field that scored two, with the second runner scoring on an errant throw into the infield. Lomavita would advance to second on the bad throw and would later score on left fielder T.J. White’s RBI single, making it 3-0.

In the bottom half of the 4th inning, Jersey Shore would get on the board after second baseman Aroon Escobar reached on a fielding error by Blue Rocks first baseman Roismar Quintana. The BlueClaws would add two more in the 5th before taking the lead in the 6th, thanks to a solo home run from center fielder Devin Saltiban. Wilmington wouldn’t lie down, though. Shortstop Cortland Lawson would reach on an error to score a run to tie it, but in the 8th inning Phillies’ top catching prospect, Eduardo Tait, gave the BlueClaws back the lead on a sac fly. And that's the score the game would end with.

Both Starting Pitchers went seven innings, with Wilmington’s Travis Sthele allowing four runs (three earned) and Jersey Shore’s Gabriel Basbosa allowing four runs (two earned).

The teams will clash again on Friday at 7:05 p.m. EDT. Lefty Mavis Graves will start for the BlueClaws, while opposing him for Wilmington will be another southpaw, Alex Clemmey.

WASHINGTON NATIONALS MINOR LEAGUE REWIND

Single-A Fredericksburg Nationals

Daily Report From Fredericksburg:

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. — The Fredericksburg Nationals rode a strong pitching performance from Starting Pitcher Liam Sullivan and a late-game hit from Jorgleys Mota to a 5-2 win over the Fayetteville Woodpeckers Thursday night.

Third baseman Jorgleys Mota’s seventh-inning line drive base hit — coupled with a costly throwing error by the Woodpeckers — drove in two runs and allowed him to circle bases for a little league inside-the-park-home run, breaking a 2-2 tie and giving the Fred-Nats the lead.

The story early in the game was by starting pitcher Liam Sullivan, who was making his first start since undergoing season-ending Tommy John Surgery during the 2024 campaign. The lefty sat down eight guys on strikes over four innings while only allowing two runs in his return to the mound.

Catcher Nate Rombach gave Sullivan support with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1. Both teams added a run in the third to make it 2-2, which it would stay till the 7th inning. That’s when Mota delivered on his Little League inside-the-park homerun “blast,” which rang off the right field wall, but was followed by a bad throw by Fayetteville’s second baseman Hector Salas, which allowed Mota to score. After those crazy events of the 7th, the game was 5-2 in the Fred-Nats' favor and that’s the way it would stay. Relief pitcher Johan Otanez would slam the door shut in the final two frames, setting down six in a row to earn his second career professional save.

Fredericksburg will look to make it two in a row vs. Fayetteville Friday night. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. EDT with fireworks after the conclusion of the game. Fayetteville will send Raimy Rodriguez to the hill, while the Nationals’ 10th-round pick from last year’s draft, Luke Johnson, will toe the rubber for the Fred-Nats.
