Nats Win 3 Straight, Finally Above .500

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

In a season of a roller coaster of up and downs, the Nats finally find themselves above .500 on the year for the first time since they were 3-2 on March 31st. Currently 55 games into the year, the Nats have severely overachieved their pre-season expectations and now look to continue to shock all the doubters they had, playing amazing baseball recently with nothing to lose.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • It’s been said hundreds of times this year, and it’ll be said a hundred more: The Nats offense this year is truly one of a kind. 55 games in, they still currently lead the MLB in runs per game with 5.42, and seem to refuse to cool off offensively. Every time they have a stretch of one or two bad games, they follow it up with an insane performance, like their 6 home run, 10 run performance yesterday.

  • Now sitting at 28-27 on the year, half a game up for current solo second in the NL East, the division continues to look more and more open for the Nats to compete for. Supposed to be an impossible division to win coming into this year, the NL East has been surprisingly wide open to begin the year, with the Braves being the only real powerhouse so far, a team that the Nats just won back-to-back games against over the weekend.

  • This starting pitching rotation has continued to get so much better since the year first started. Outside of their go-to aces like Cade Cavalli and Foster Griffin, who have been good all season the others have grown exponentially. Zack Littell has won 4 of his last 5 games and Miles Mikolas, who posted an 8.46 ERA in April currently has a 3.26 ERA in the month of May. A key part of why the Nats are winning games, the effort to get better out of the starting pitchers really shows how keen the Nats are on competing this season.

  • After pitching 5.0 hitless innings with 7 strikeouts in their 2-0 win against the Braves Saturday, Jake Irvin who looked like he had finally found his stuff, had to leave for injury. Luckily so far only being placed on 15-day IL, the Nats have recalled PJ Poulin back up from Triple-A, and are gonna have 2-3 games coming up where the bullpen will have to take an added role and help the Nats keep their wins piling up.

    🗣️ LOCKER ROOM LORE

Currently on their 3 game winning streak, and showing no signs of stopping anytime soon, first-year manager Blake Butera kept it pretty simple.

“It’s fun winning baseball games,” manager Blake Butera said.

Winning 3 in a row against above .500 teams has been no easy feat, and yesterday’s win was greatly helped by Curtis Mead, who tallied his first multi-homer game of his career. Blake was seemingly thrilled about this as well.

“Couldn’t be happier for him to get this opportunity," Butera said of Mead. “The spot he was in was hard, and to be able to get him some rhythm goes a long way to get him some confidence.”

Playing two more against the Guardians and moving home to play the Padres to end the week, do you think the Nats can close out the week still above .500?

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

After going up 3-0 in the first inning, Nats fans knew the odds were in their favor for the game, but had no idea the sheer dominance they would see out of the offense for the rest of the game. Putting up 10 runs by the 6th inning, a multi homer performance from Curtis Mead and 1 earned run through 7 innings by Zack Littell equated to an easy blowout win to move the Nats to three in a row.

📊 THE BOX SCORE

  • Winning Pitcher: Zack Littell ([4–4], 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K)

  • Losing Pitcher: Tanner Bibee ([0-7], 3.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 0 BB, 3 K)

  • Team RISP: [2-for-8]

📈 MORNING STAT

55 games into the year, yesterday’s game is already the 8th time they’ve scored 10+ runs in a game this year. At this time last year they only had 5, to put into perspective how strong the offense has been.

⚾ DUGOUT DISPATCH

In a week riddled with rain delays and postpones, the Nats minor league teams refused to be slowed down, all winning their games on Sunday completing yet another minor league sweep. Currently all still sitting above .500, a new week begins today for the teams and they look to continue dominating in their respective leagues.

📊 THE BOX SCORE:

  • New assignment, no problem. Nats number 9 prospect Seaver King was recently moved up to the 31-20 Rochester Red Wings, and has shown no signs of struggle. The Nats Triple-A affiliate Red Wings have won 9 straight games, greatly helped by King, who has tallied 9 hits and 9 RBIs in 6 games played for them so far.

  • The Fred Nats, the Nats Single-A affiliate continue to dominate, winning their last series 5-1 and moving to 32-13 on the year. Being the Nats strongest minor league team so far this year, the Fred Nats have been helped recently by Nats number 7 prospect Gavin Fien. Fien has tallied 5 hits in 5 games, and has recently seen the DH role as he begins his climb to the majors.

  • The Nats High-A affiliate Wilmington Blue Rocks won both games of their double-header Sunday and move to 24-20 on the year. In a strong year for them, Nats number 5 prospect Devin Fitz-Gerald has continued to have the hottest bat, batting .299 on the season with an OP of 1.033, he has been seemingly unstoppable waiting for his next call up.

  • The Harrisburg Senators, Nats Double-A affiliate also swept their Sunday double-header moving to 24-21 on the year. Tallying 5 hits in their last 3 games, Nats number 23 prospect Sam Petersen has been having a nice stretch of games, giving the Senators some great outfield play and providing a nice offensive bat.

📈 MORNING STAT

The Nats minor league affiliates are now a combined 111-76 on the year, a number that continues to get more and more unfathomable as the season goes on.
