Washington Nationals Battle Back to End Seven-Game Skid With 5-4 Win

The Washington Nationals ended their seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory in Atlanta on Wednesday night.

ATLANTA, GA. - MAY 15 - The Washington Nationals ended their seven-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory in Atlanta on Wednesday night. Some late offense saved a rough Mitchell Parker outing and led the Nats to a close victory.

Parker took the mound and delivered another tough performance, allowing four runs over 4.2 innings while striking out six batters. He was taken out after being hit on the left thigh by a line drive from Austin Riley, but the game was still within reach before he exited. The bullpen showed some great resilience, with Jackson Rutledge, Cole Henry, and Jose A. Ferrer combining for 3.1 scoreless innings. Ferrer, in particular, was impressive, pitching 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and earning his first win of the season. Closer Kyle Finnegan secured his 13th save by retiring the side in the ninth inning, despite giving up a leadoff single.

Offensively, the Nationals amassed 11 hits, with contributions from up and down the lineup. José Tena and Dylan Crews each drove in runs during a two-run seventh inning that narrowed the Braves' lead. In the eighth, Amed Rosario's RBI single tied the game, and James Wood's double to right field brought home the go-ahead run. CJ Abrams reached base three times and scored a run, while Tena and Crews each had two hits and an RBI, showing the team's balanced offensive performance despite having only scored eight runs in their last five games.

This victory not only snapped a seven-game skid but also provided a much-needed morale boost for the Nationals, who improved to 18-26. The win prevented a series sweep and showed the team's resilience, since they overcame a 4-1 deficit and stared down the barrell of an eighth straight loss. The bullpen's strong performance and timely hitting could serve as a turning point for the Nationals, if everything stays in check.

That win was great. Put one on the board for the good guys, how's that? The boys played well. We're playing baseball. It's fun to watch these guys come out and compete. … It was a good team effort today.

Looking ahead, the Nationals will conclude their four-game series against the Braves on Thursday afternoon, with Trevor Williams slated to start against Atlanta's AJ Smith-Shawver. Williams will aim to build on the momentum from Wednesday's win and help the Nationals secure a series split before heading to Baltimore for a weekend series against the Orioles.
