SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - MAY 29 - The Washington Nationals earned a massive, decisive win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday night. Trevor Williams delivered his best start of the season to date, while the offense went nuclear early and throughout the ballgame.
Williams took the mound for the Nats, looking to put his early season struggles behind him on this west coast trip. He did exactly that, going 6.0 innings while allowing just three hits and no walks. While he only struck out two hitters, he trusted the defense to work behind him, leading to a quality start and a win for the veteran right-hander as he lowered his ERA to 5.69.

Brad Lord relieved Williams in the seventh, delivering a scoreless frame with two strikeouts despite allowing two hits. Jose A. Ferrer and Zach Brzykcy then each tossed two scoreless and hitless frames to shut the game down, earning the Nats their 25th win as they allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out four.
Offensively, the Nats came in looking to get things going early after a night where a James Wood solo shot was their only offense. The team went down 1-2-3 in the first, but a Luis Garcia Jr. line drive solo homer in the second inning got them going. Josh Bell immediately followed it up with a home run of his own, and Robert Hassell III hit a single.
While that was the last of the offense for that inning, it set the stage for a much bigger night. In the fourth, Hassell drove Garcia in with another single, making him 2-2 after being hitless for four games entering this one. Jose Tena then doubled, bringing in Bell and Hassell to make it a 5-0 game. To lead off the fifth, Wood hit yet another home run, his fifteenth of the year (60% of which Baseball Savant estimates to be no-doubters). In the eighth, Hassell also went deep for his first career home run. The eighth and ninth runs came in the same inning off of a Wood double to score Daylen Lile and CJ Abrams. All told, the Nats made their offensive comeback, and looked really good doing it.
I’m glad to get [my first homer] out of the way. I thank Davey for bringing me back down to earth before the game. Brought me in and was talking about just being me. ... So I have him to credit for that.
The Nationals will wrap this mid-week series up on Thursday night as they send their ace, MacKenzie Gore, to face Emerson Hancock, who has struggled through his first eight games and 39.1 innings. A win would really boost the Nats’ momentum as they head to Arizona for a three-game weekend set in the desert.
