CHICAGO, IL- The Washington Nationals defeated the Chicago Cubs in comeback fashion this afternoon in Chicago 6-3. That was the Nationals 23rd comeback win of the season and are now 29-42 on the road and are 9-14-0 in road series this season. The Nationals have one more series against the N.L. Central when the Pittsburg Pirates visit Nationals Park on Friday.
For eight innings, the Nationals struggled to find their rhythm, limited to just three hits and no walks, appearing lifeless at the plate against a sharp Cubs bullpen. But everything changed in the top of the ninth when Robert Hassell III’s leadoff opposite-field home run off Cubs closer Daniel Palencia breathed new life into the team and their chances. That was Hassell’s third home run this season and the last time since August 2 against the Brewers.
That blast set the stage for a dramatic turnaround, as CJ Abrams’ hit and a patient walk by James Wood put runners in scoring position with no outs in the top of the ninth. Then, veteran slugger Josh Bell—pinch hitting for the catcher—delivered the biggest moment of the game, crushing a three-run homer to left-center field that flipped the scoreboard in favor of the Nationals and ignited the visiting dugout. The rally didn’t stop there; Daylen Lile followed with his third triple of the weekend and scored on Brady House’s sacrifice fly, capping a five-run uprising that stunned the home crowd.
Robert Hassell III hits a solo home run to left field and cut the Washington Nationals' deficit to 3-2 in the top of the 9th.
This was his third home run of the season and his first since August 2nd against the Brewers.

The finishing touch came from reliever Jose A. Once again the Nationals bullpen has been quiet impressive. Right-handed pitcher Mason Thompson was credited with the win this afternoon.
