SEATTLE, WASHINGTON - MAY 28 - The Washington Nationals suffered a tough loss in Seattle last night after a rough start for Mitchell Parker spiraled through the whole dugout. The offense was held down for the most part, and the bullpen struggled to keep things intact.

Mitchell Parker's outing unraveled quickly as he gave up back-to-back home runs to Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh in the first inning, putting the Nationals in an early 3-0 hole. Parker lasted 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs, including three homers, while striking out four and walking one. The bullpen couldn't hold things down, either; Jackson Rutledge gave up three runs in 1.1 innings, and Andrew Chafin allowed two more in the eighth, though only one was earned. Only Zach Brzykcy managed to get a scoreless inning, though he issued a walk and hit a batter. Overall, the pitching staff could not contain Seattle's offense, allowing 12 hits and nine runs in the big loss.

Offensively, the Nationals were held down by Mariners rookie Logan Evans, who pitched eight strong innings, giving up just four hits and one run. James Wood had the lone highlight with a towering solo home run in the fourth inning, his 14th of the season. The rest of the lineup managed only three singles and failed to mount any significant threats, leaving two runners on base. CJ Abrams, Keibert Ruiz, and other notable stars went hitless, and the team struck out five times without drawing a walk yet again.

This loss drops the Nationals to 24-30 on the season, placing them fourth in the NL East, 11 games behind the division-leading Phillies. While many teams are doing worse, and this has been a better season than the last few for the Nats, it has caught the eye of some people in a more negative light as some news stories from yesterday suggest. The team will need to shake off the headlines and keep playing ball, or things could go awry quickly.

Up next…

Looking ahead, the Nationals will aim to bounce back in the second game of the series tonight at T-Mobile Park, with first pitch scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET. They'll need a stronger performance from their pitchers and more production from the lineup to even the series against the Mariners.
