Today, the Washington Nationals Philanthropies named Nationals Manager Dave Martinez the "Power of Baseball Award." The annual award is presented to an individual, corporation, organization, or local group in Washington DC that embodies the positive character and level of achievement exemplified throughout baseball.
"I was overwhelmed about the award yesterday," Martinez said on Tuesday. "For me, it's the power of positivity, and I love it. I've always said that if I can do something to help one person out every day, regardless if it's here or outside of baseball, I'd feel good about myself…”
"To get that award, it means a lot to me and my family. My kids texted me last night, 'That's pretty awesome, Dad.' I just try to be as positive as I can every day, as you guys know, and I love people. I try to help everybody as much as I can, but I appreciate the award very much."
Davey Martinez is the steady hand that guided the Washington Nationals to their first-ever World Series championship. According to a video released by Washington Nationals Philanthropies, "He's[Martinez] the ballclub's heartbeat, showing up every day in the same mood with the same mantra: go 1-0 today."
The Washington Nationals strive to become a civic partner to every Washingtonian interested in making a positive difference in our region and a leading philanthropic organization in professional sports.
At the heart of the Washington Nationals Philanthropies is a simple purpose with resounding impact – foster a culture of philanthropy in the DMV.
As the official charitable arm of the Washington Nationals, Nationals Philanthropies is a new entity that replaces the Dream Foundation. Building on the success of the foundation’s first decade in Washington, we aspire to an even bolder, more ambitious philanthropic vision that continues to align with the work of the Youth Baseball Academy while building an enhanced and cohesive platform for civic engagement that extends far beyond the Academy walls.
The Washington Nationals Philanthropies will catalyze the energy of Nationals fans, and the generosity and philanthropic goals of Nationals players, corporate champions, and community partners to invest philanthropic dollars with, through, and to Nationals Philanthropies – fueling even greater good for a better Washington region.
