Cairo, who has been Dave Martinez’s bench coach since 2024, had a 17 year career in the big leagues before landing his first full-time bench coach job after the 2020 season with the White Sox.
He managed Chicago to a thrilling win in the inaugural Field of Dreams game, as full time skipper Tony La Russa was at a funeral. Later in that same year, La Russa was out for an extended period of time, and Cairo led them to an 18-16 run.
The move comes just less than a day after Martinez and longtime general manager Mike Rizzo were relieved of their duties following Sunday’s loss to the Red Sox. Rizzo’s interim successor, Mike DeBartolo, was named immediately after the firings.
