During the first full week of the 2026 season, the Washington Nationals traded Jake Eder to the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving the Rochester Red Wings with only four pitchers in their starting rotation. Shortly after, the Nationals signed right-hander Chandler Champlain on March 31, following his release by the Kansas City Royals at the end of Spring Training.

Champlain made his Rochester debut on April 4 against Scranton in a relief role. With the bullpen taxed from the previous day’s doubleheader and the starter lasting only three innings, Rochester needed length.
