How Did Tonight's Game Play Out?
West Palm Beach, Florida — March 8th, 2026 — Ronny Cruz’s pinch-hit home run propelled the Nats over the Astros, 3-1.
Today’s game was a classic pitchers’ duel, with the Nats’ pitching staff striking out 11 and the Astros’ with 13. The Nats didn’t get their first hit until the seventh inning, when they scored three runs fueled by Ronny Cruz’s home run. Today was arguably the best pitching performance of the spring from Washington.
How Did the Nationals Score Their Runs?
The first six innings of the game were not very productive from the Nats’ offense. Keibert Ruiz led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right field to break the no-hitter. Abimelec Ortiz followed Ruiz with another single to move pinch-runner Rafael Ramirez Jr. to third base. Drew Millas scored Ramirez Jr. with a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat. Ronny Cruz was next up and deposited a ball over the wall in left-center field. At just 19-years-old, it’s impressive to see Cruz take advantage of an opportunity like this.

They combined for just one hit allowed, four strikeouts, and one walk. The Nats’ pitching staff struck out 11 batters and allowed just three hits, which will win a lot of games.
What Defensive Plays Changed the Game?
It was another clean game for the Nats’ defense. Andrew Alvarez generated three ground ball outs, and surprisingly, no other pitcher got one. Today’s game was a true pitchers’ duel between the Nats and Astros. Defense wasn’t a factor in the result of the game.
